Hello,

Come summer, I may buy a new car. Still not 100% yet as I might do something else with the money, but a toy is very tempting right now! A quick search on Pistonheads has brought up some very cool machinery. I emailed them over to my girlfriend and she's added her comments to each car. (Ignore the colour comments!) I had just picked a few examples to show her the cars so features and spec specific to those cars should be ignored. I'm just interested in your thoughts on the models in general.

I have no real requirements. It will be a second car for fun. I'll be 26 so insurance isn't too much of an issue anymore. MPG isn't too much of a problem as it will be a second car and we can take the other car for the runs down to Cornwall if needs be. Most important is the speed/power and the noise!!! It's a second car so it needs to make me feel good and excited. I'm not sure whether to get a small 2 seater convertible or a big V8 monster! The convertible will probably be more fun, and be more of a fun weekend car (which is what it should be), but everytime I log onto AudiSRS I get tempted by the V6 and V8 twin turbos, and the noise at the rolling road day at MRC was awesome!!! If I had a large car, we'd get away with a small everyday car (like a Fiat 500 sort of thing), if I went for a 2 seater, we'd have to get a big car for everyday stuff and for the bikes etc.

My girlfriend has rated the ones she likes most at the top....

Pros = LOVE IT Cons = I probably won’t get insured on it
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2341946.htm

Pros = colour, the tinned windows, the interior and the lights. Cons = it’s quite big, I imagine expensive the run i.e. can’t take to Cornwall
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2203174.htm

Pros = something different, new and exciting, small and nippy to take to Cornwall, nice colour, convertible Cons = none
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2256824.htm

Pros = something different, new and exciting, small and nippy to take to Cornwall. Cons = GAY COLOUR
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2020661.htm

Pros = comfortable, nice ride, smart, lots of buttons to play with. Cons = doesn’t look very exciting, colour.
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2504406.htm & http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2221080.htm

Pros = convertible, smart, nippy enough to take to Cornwall. Pros = common, obvious, poser car, colour gets dirty quickly and looks rubbish unless you clean it once a week.
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2440030.htm

Pros = convertible, smart, nippy enough to take to Cornwall. Pros = common, obvious, poser car, colour a bit boring. Would be better in red or gun grey or white.
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2279561.htm

Pros = you like it, nice colour, smart Cons = boring, obvious, common, no where to store the hard roof top
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2420296.htm

Pros = you like it Cons = boring, obvious, common, boring colour, not unique, everyone has got one
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2197266.htm & http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2485925.htm

Pros = fast, nice colour, nice interior. Cons = doesn’t look much different to your old car, too expensive to take to Cornwall
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2365993.htm

Pros = fast. Cons = boring grey colour, nasty wooden interior too expensive to take to Cornwall.
http://pistonheads.co.uk/sales/2424032.htm

Pros = fast, interior. Cons = serious GAY COLOUR YUCK!!!!! Yellow is for 2 seater convertibles not big estate cars, too expensive to take to Cornwall.

This is just hypothetical at the moment. As I say, it will be summer when (if) I do get one, but I'm keen to know what you think of the cars. Budget would be up to £16,000 really. I suppose I could go over if I used finance, but I'd rather buy cash.

Dan

I know it will be expensive. I've had a couple of Audi S4's and VX220's peviously over the years so I'm used to paying silly money for insurance!

Therefore these should be top of your list! For me it should be a ragtop especially if it is not going to be a daily driver or you have something for the winter.

£16k budget, not worried about insurance costs yet it's going to cost too much to take some of them to Cornwall?????

Where do you live? Australia??

No real helpful suggestions! Wish I was in your position though.

Although, if you end up with a very practical first car that can do most things the danger with a small second car is there's very few 'right' times to use it. I'd actually be looking at something that's not going to depreciate much, possibly something like an RS2 or an Escort Cosworth.

This is my girlfriend's preferences in order:

Honda s2000
Vauxhall
Lotus
Audi
BMW
Mercedes

Can't say I agree! I'm very tempted by the BMW Z4M Roadster, even though I'm not that keen on BMW's...probably least keen on the S2000 TBH.

I think it's fair to say that all of them will be "nippy enough to take to cornwall". wink

For "toy factor" I would probably go for the Exige myself.

Sound's like the mrs is wearing the trousers anyway....... biggrin

My girlfriend's parents live in Falmouth, about 400 mile round trip from our place in Southampton. It's not too expensive to do it, but with the S4 doing 20MPG and doing the run twice a run sometimes, it was getting quite pricey! I don't plan on taking the fun car to Cornwall too much so it's not much of an issue to me.

Those cars did cross my mind.

Something like a big merc, bmw M etc. you would have to budget about £2k a year running costs (tyres/service/maintenance) and most of those on the list would probably be around £1500 a year to insure depending on where you live.

Personally out of them i would choose the S2000. Always liked them and if you have a big car for everyday already i would rather have two seater for weekend jaunts.

She's not, I just value her opinion as she loves coming out to all the south coast Pistonheads meets, so she has to like the car too.

Agree with that and am used to high running costs thanks to the S4. Thanks for the heads up.

That converted Exige is awesome. WIll be a bit wearing on that long schlep to Cornwall, though.

Mind you, I regularly drive a Morgan Aero to Norfolk, and enjoy every mile, so comfort needn't be a top priority...

Previous generation Audi RS4 costing £17k? That's far too much money for an old-tech machine like that. RS6 is a monster (my folks had one) - but not much fun in the corners.

Z4M convertible is actually a good car - debadge and put decent tyres/exhaust on it.

996 C4S may be common, but it's an outstanding machine. Ignore the cheap GT3 lookalike.

Personally, if it were a second car and I had a garage, I would have a mint TVR Griffith 500, because it's a properly old school, classic Brit sports car.

But for my only car? The 996 C4S or M Roadster.

Interesting stuff, thanks.

By the way, I have no garage. It's parked in a quiet cul-de-sac on the road (bumper to kerb) with 4 of the other residents that don't have driveways. One reason why I don't want anything too lairy. For that reason the Porsche and TVR aren't too appealing. It's not the best neighbourhood!

Out of all of those I'd be tempted by a Z4 the most. Some of those cars will cost a LOT of money to do any sort of mileage in and will be big money if things break.

S2000 didn't do it at all for me when I drove one, M3 is a good all round suggestion too.
