What the fk?

Iv been driving now for 3 years, 3 years no claims, only one car on my insurance (Mini Cooper D), and been quoted 1,900. Last year I paid 580.

How come the quote has gone up 3x?

They don't want to insure you any more.

My youngest son has just passed his test.

He's keener on cars than the other kids and obviously I would like to get him on the road in a cheap runabout.

Don't see how I can do it though. A £300 Austin Metro from E-bay was under consideration...until I got quoted £3,350 for him and I with him as a named driver. I'll use it as a station car when he heads for University.

In my book, they're taking the piss out of me saying we don't want to insure you, but if we do, we'll have all your money.

I hear tales that classic insurance can be an option. Is it worth talking to the insurers does the collective PH Borg think?

I was terrified about renewals but I have to say mine haven't gone up much - MX-5 from 400 to 470 or so, Saab for £2?? to £340. That's the renewal premiums so I'm sure I'll be able to get a bit off. Not as bad as I suspected TBH.

I was pleasantly surprised earlier this week, I rang up to get a quote on my soon to be track toy, as it's got a roll cage and many other modifications I found a specialist company that will insure it with unlimited modifications and the best part is it's £110 cheaper than i can insure the car as a standard road car!

I'm convinced the call operators just have a random number generator thoughsilly

I couldn't get a classic policy until I was 22, and that was back in the good old days (well, 10 or so years back) so I'd be surprised if you can. You also need to have another car for most (all? all of mine have required it) classic policies. Speak to Peter Best though, always helpfull.

My insurance actually went down a fair bit this year (and I'm old enough that age doesn't affect it, and already have full NCB)...which seems to be the oppositite to what most people have experienced, or is it just those getting hit complaining the most? Hopefully the change isn't just delayed and will get me next year.

I was told recently that no longer works, as they base the premium on the highest risk driver.. this is the result of everyone suing for whiplash after a 5 mph shunt..

Classic insurance is unlikely until he's 21. might be worth finding something with an owners club, I know a young lad recently who insured a 1.6 twin spark Alfa 145 for considerably less than the metro quote..

Shop around, renewals now seem to be a lot more expensive that new policies for some reason.

You'll probably find that buying a newer car would actually be cheaper to insure. Harder to steal and better in a crash makes insurance cheaper.

Somebody else suggested that to me.

I think some time on the phone is what I need to invest in. Hopeless trying to do anything on line.

Maybe not cheaper but probably better value for money. My daughter's 1995 Corsa, value about £100, cost me £350 to insure last week with a £650 excess. I've bought her a £5K Clio today and they only want an extra £170, and that's including bringing the excess down to a more sensible figure.

It's been said before that insurance co's will hike the insurance for small cars when it's the kid as a named driver on a parent's policy as they think some 'fronting' is going on.

So I'm renewing this year, my best quote?

£1,700 (with admiral and co...)

Best quote with an insurance company I'd actually use?

2,100 (with LV=)

I'm 27
Driving over 2 years
Driving an oil burning Volvo S60
Living in a band F area
...had a fault crash in 2010 weeping

I'd like to add that the crash was a 3 car accident caused by a driver who took off upon seeing what he had caused, but I'm not bitter... just p155ed off furious

Moral of the story? don't crash

Sorry to hijack slightly but what is classic insurance? Is it only applicable for certain cars?

in my experience, insurance went up by £300 for gaining an extra years ncb rolleyes
Spend a few hours phoneing aroud and not using the internets random number cruncher and you could be amazed smile
also try a slightly rearer car that a normal person of that age wouldnt use and it'll be alot cheaper smile
