I'm going to be buying another car. My present car has my own number plate(present from my wife). The new one I'm buying also has a private plate that the owner wants to keep. What's the best and quickest way to swap the plates? I'll be keeping my present car in the family so my number going on the new one doesn't have to happen quickly, just getting the private plate off the new car as I don't want any holdups in the sale. If I take possession of the new car with the other owner's private plate still on can I easily transfer it back to him. I'm sure somebody on here has done this before.
Thanks for any advice.

As yours is staying in the family, forget about that one for the minute, it's easier to do things seperately with the DVLA as they can't cope with multiple tasks.
If you buy the car with the plate on it you have two options, either you wait for the V5 to come back in your name and then take the plate off and put it on retention with the previous owner as a grantee or nominee can't remember what they call it. Or the previous owner can apply to put the plate on retention, he'll have to then wait for the replacement mot, tax disc and V5 to come back and then transfer it into your name.
Personnally I'd rather go for option one. Then once you have put the plate onto retention for the previous owner, you'll have to wait for the V5 to come back again with the original plate on it. To put it on retention will cost £105, so be sure to get the fee from the previous owner. Then you can tranfer your plate onto your car at a cost of £80. The form you need for everything is the V317 and is available on the DVLA website.

Thanks for that. It looks to be straightforward enough.
