Experience/Wisdom required !

Hello. I am looking for opinions based on your experiences of cars under 1549cc powered by petrol and that will average 40mpg and that can be purchased today for £1000 or less. All shapes and sizes considered not adverse to a classic I have a very open mind. So not so much a 'what car?' as I have a fairly expansive knowledge of the car industry/history but more of a share your experiences so that I may see what the car is like to live with every day.
