So, have a Golf R on order which is taking a long time to get here. I went for a manual.

I have been offered a cancelled order which has arrived in the same specification as what I ordered (3 door, rising blue, leather, acc) but is a DSG instead of a manual.

I kind of like the idea of the DSG being much faster, but I also like a proper manual. I live in the city and most of the driving it will be doing is on long sweeping country roads and crawling in traffic, so probably don’t need a manual…

Help me out here. Am I going to regret not going for a DSG, or am I going to regret sticking with the manual?

ETA. Damnit. Should have posted a poll

Go for the DSG. Auto when you need it, quicker changes than manual.

I thing the DSG box is brilliant but the REAL DRIVERS club and TC16 will be along to tell you how awful it is and I cba arguing.

Is it being offered at the same price, because the DSG was an expensiveish option.

I'll leave it with Evo as they summed it up well with their long term R32 test:

I nearly bought an Edition 30 with a DSG...until I test drove it. Very, very impressive tech. Zero driver involvement.

Not much more - it works out at around GBP650 more or so, about $1000AUD.

I will go for a test drive back to back to make up my mind, but was just chucking it up for more discussion.

I don't think you'll ever get a clear winning answer on this, Steve Sutcliffe in Autocar ravs about the DSG in his Scirocco R and says you'd be mad not to go for it and others will have different views. Certainly if I lived in London I'd go for it but having driven one of the first examples of DSG on a Mk5 Golf I was far from convinced about it adding to the fun.

I think you could get it for the same price if you asked nicely. The second it turns up at the dealers it'll start losing money.

Father has the DSG in his 3.2 A3, I thought I was a very good 'box, quick off the line, seamless changes and LC if you were that way inclined. It doesn't allow for heal & toe obviously, but I think it is better in every way to any conventional auto box.

I would regret not going for a DSG if I were in the position. All benefits of manual with all benefits of auto. Only downside is a little extra weight, and two clutches to change at 70k miles.

My father had a DSG MkV GTI which I drove a fair bit, which he swapped last year for a manual MkVI GTD, which I have also driven a fair bit.

The manual is fun, but the DSG is better. If that makes sense. Personally with an R I'd take the DSG - racking up through the gears with perfect instantaneous upshifts never gets old. And with the R power it's probably even better. Also; launch control.

Why have fun when you can go to sleep and let the car do the work?

I find the DSG impressive but have only tried it in TDIs. Not sure I would want my performance car to have it fitted though, but it depends why you are buying the Golf, to be a chuckable quick motor then manual, to be a fast way to cover ground with ease DSG.

Hmmm, decisions decisions.

I don't want to be waiting for months for it to come, but I'm not sure if DSG is for me.

I think a back to back test drive is needed. Damn. What a horrid way to spend a weekend.

Semi Auto is way to go, if the option is there.......whoever the manufacturer is.....is so good in city/town driving and still gives the press on thrills on the open road....

Why anyone would want to wait for a jumped off Golf seems crazy to me, but each to their own. Be patient and wait for what you want, don't be swayed.

Take it if it's the same price, don't for a premium.

Or ask if you can drive a DSG first and see what you think. I've heard good things about DSG, but I've never liked the push button autos I've driven, so I'd want to know if it's really better.

My friend bought a Golf GTI with DSG, and couldnt get on with it in the snow. He hated it , sold it and bought a manual. Try one first before you make your decision.

This. DSG is an expensive option, so if they'll give it to you for free, then do it! smile
