Another insurance thread YES
but this one is rather weird, so bear with me.

I just did a quote on my Saxo, it came back at 1444. Fair enough. Did a quote on an MG 3 insurance groups lower, it jumps up 200 quid. Not good.

I left it a while, returned to find my session was inactive or something so did another quote on the Saxo to set a benchmark. This time I put my gran on instead of my father, the premium was circa 1600. So I put my dad back on and it was still circa 1600!!

WTF?! I went through and through my quote and it was exactly the same. Anyway I left it a few minutes and went and did a re quote.

This time it came up as 1500. I had said I was a Computer technician rather than a computer engineer

How fked up is that? So I decided to delve deeper.

The changes I made
  • I said I was an IT Technician rather than a computer engineer
  • I said I bought the car in 2010, rather than 2011 (which is true - my mistake)
  • I said that the car was parked on the street rather than down the drive
The change in cost? £300

So for the sake of buying the car at a different time, parking it in a less secure place (in my case anyway) and variation in the job there was a difference of nearly 20%

Ludicrous.

Just thought I'd share!

Dan

Try upping your excess - might come down even further. It does all seem rather arbitrary.

Until recently I thought saying "garaged" would help, but it would seem that "on drive" is the way to go for some insures.

Yes, apparently people have a hard time hitting their garage as they have many claims when people damage their cars parking them in said garages.

Wouldn't have thought so. I thought it was more of a pressured/liable role in the insurers eyes.

Its common sence really. Its a case of statistics.

You are more likely to have an accident in a car that you don't know well, so if you bought the car last year you know it better therefore are less likely to crash.

Decreasing the value of your car will bring the price down of course.

Different occupations change the quote too.

limit the mileage... a bit more

also check on the policy wording if the limited mileage is for the main driver alone or the car.
if it's just for the main driver as I think it usually is, then I thought you said your nan/dad/goat was using it about 25% of the time.

True, my quote went up from £320 to £340* for keeping the car in a garage. I'd expected it to be cheaper, but it wasn't.

  • For a car that does 0-62 in 5.4 secs. There are some advantages to being an old fart in a safe postcodesmile

I heard residential parking knocks it down a bit too, for some insurers, despite what I thought.
Was told it's because thieves don't know which house contains the keys for the car they want.

Yeah, mine came down a hundred to just below £200. I also have know idea why, & this was an automatic renewal which I normally run a mile from.

ETA.. Also a bit off topic, How many people 20 years ago ever thought that their tax would be more expensive than their insurance?

Mine dropped from about £1650 to about £1000. Group 17 car. But the difference is because I got 2 years no claims this year rather than the 1 last year. Guess doubling the no claims was more significant than the general price increase seen this year.

My wife's insurance actually went up a little, even with the additional year's no claims.

That happened to the wife. When she left Diamond she asked for her proof of no claims, and it had an extra year on it. We rang them to check, and they said it was correct.
