Fancy a Pagoda with a 5 speed auto and ABS? How about a W111 with an all alloy 5.0 V8 and 300bhp?
They will even add an AMG lump if you wish. Love that idea!
Now, where's that lottery ticket?

How about a modernised Jensen Interceptor?
There is a crowd who do this, main change is a more modern engine for increased power and better fuel economy, I think there was one of their cars in the classifieds here recently.
Then there is the SX which has even more changed.

Looking at the prices, doesn't seem bad value, though I guess it depends a lot on what they do with the donor car.
The thing is, I'm not entirely sure I see the point in a faster Pagoda, or indeed any of the cars they modify. I'd worry that a mint original would have a lot more character?
It's certainly impressive though

For me, the appeal lies in the car being more useable as a daily. Modern engines, fresh transmission, upgraded brakes etc.
The gorgeous looks with turn key reliability has undoubted appeal. I agree that having too much power is a waste though, I'd be happy with the engine from an SL500.

True. I guess a Pagoda with modern running gear would take a hell of a lot of beating for tooling about London.
I don't know how long the original 2.8 litre lump kept on trucking, did it evolve into the 300 CE lump? Could be a way of getting the performance and reliability while being a bit more sympathetic?

As far as I can tell the two engines come from different families and the 3.0-litre engine used in the W124 owed nothing to the older 2.8. In fact it seems the 2.8 DOHC 'six from the R107 SL (and W123, and W116 S-class) was a new engine in its time and not a twin-cam version of the 2.8 SOHC unit found in the Pagoda SL (and other Mercedes of the time). Of course if others know better I'll happily stand corrected.I don't know how long the original 2.8 litre lump kept on trucking, did it evolve into the 300 CE lump?
