Insurance when selling cars?
Discussion
Considering buying a new motor at the moment.
How do people deal with insurance when selling the old one?
I'll (temporarily) have 3 cars, and 2 policies. Obviously don't want to be paying full whack for too long, so probably cancel the insurance on the car I'm selling and transfer it to the new car (with NCB), and take out a new policy for the car I want to sell. But what if it takes months to sell? It could cost a fortune...
Better to stick it in the garage and take out 1-day insurance when somebody wants to drive it?

Not an option very shortly, unfortunately. Get a multicar policy, or sell one before you buy another.

So if it's sat in the garage not being used it needs to be insured? The garage, even the house doesn't have to be insured, but the car does?
Licence to print money
I assumed the multicar policies (admiral) were just the usual crap from the mainstream purporting to offer you a discount but not really, and only on the most basic of cooking cars (ie, add in anything odd like business use, imports, modified and it's no can do)
Do the small indy brokers do policies like this?

Wow that law is fantastic...Not an option very shortly, unfortunately. Get a multicar policy, or sell one before you buy another.
Sorry to hijack the thread OP but I have a problem to do with this subject.
I have just renewed my insurance policy and I am looking at new cars, tax is due end of March.
So if I buy a new car how do I go about selling my current car, with this new law, without it costing thousands as my insurance is over 1.5k for the year. Hope this makes sense.

No, only if it's not declared SORN. So essentially, while taxed, the car must also be insured. Can't see the problem myself.The.

As for how to sell a car you don't regularly insure, just go online and get it insured for the day, or get the buyer to do this instead/as well. I've never paid more than about £20, often less.

Admiral Multicar is really very good in my experience, though I have not had to make a claim, with my last car it was imported, modified and had business use mileage, no problems at all.The most common way to do it is to have your insurance policy for the car you're selling swapped onto the car you've just bought. THEN add the car you're selling back onto that policy on a temporary basis for something like £20/week.
(e.g. I have a Peugeot and buy a Vauxhall. I will swap the Pug policy onto the VX, and then add the Pug back on temporarily.)
Call your insurance co and so long as they are not one of the s
t ones they will sort this out for your.

After a sale failed to go through I now have to reinsure the old car as well as the new one even though its only sitting on the drive. The quote for one month temporary cover with my old insurer was a staggering £160. I had to take annual cover out but with a new policy and no NCD. Even when I cancel I'll face a fee of £55 plus the extended period for cover I dont want or need.
