I drove from Edinburgh to Winchester today in the family E320CDi Estate - less than 7 hours in proper comfort...they really are truly fit for purpose.

Highly recommended.

Very nice. I'm actually thinking of a c320cdi. For the money I could have something faster, but with 224hp and diesel economy, I don't know what's not to like.

In non dreamland, I'd love a 320. They look like a pretty amazing all rounder

EarlOfHazard - I have just bought a C320 CDI Estate. Cracking car - happy to discuss if you're interested.

Yes it would be nice to get a overall view on what the car is like. I've driven several older Mercs, and I do love them. But the C320cdi, well it's also quite rare as people usually defer to the economy side and go for smaller engines.
Do you rate the 7 speed box? I've heard the 50-70 time is better than the contemporary AMG variant!

2005 55, so just past the poor quality stage.

There is a very nice E63 saloon which parks at my station...lovely, but the diesel has plenty of oomph for 95% of occasions.

We did Kent to South West France on a single tank last year, with not alot overtaking us...as you say, "what's not to like".

It is a small estate but practical enough for my needs - comes fully loaded with Command, Heated electric memory seats, cruise etc.

I have driven many autos but this is the first I have owned. The 7G box is a lock up torque convertor type so it drives more like a manual / DSG than an old fashioned auto. I believe the final ratio is the same as the original 6th gear but the intermediate gears are more closely stacked for better acceleration.

Great amount of torque and rapid where it counts. The in gear time is quicker than the larger engined petrol MBs until they really get into their stride. The usual 30 - 70 mph acceleration window is dispatched with ease.

I have averaged 34 mpg so far over 1500 miles but I had 39 mpg on the drive down a mixture of A Road and motorway driving with the cruise on at around 85 leptons.

Therein lies the difference; The AMG did SW London to St Emillion this summer on 2.5 tankfulls; average MPG for the 2.5k mile round-trip was 19MPG

Thats what I thought until I realised it was an auction with nearly six days to go.

If it helps I just sold a very similar car, a 2005/55 C320 CDI (224 model) Avantgarde Sport Pack, 1 Owner with perfect full Merc History, 109k for £7,500.

Plus I happen to have a very clean E320 CDi Estate in at the moment.

Bit of a shameless plug I know, but it is relevant to the thread.

Admittedly this is a nice one and will go for (I predict) circa 10k, but there are higher mileage examples going for just over 7k. Saloon or Estate, both are nice, the estate being the ideal Le Man car.
