A few years ago I remember reading a very interesting book about some of VW South Africa's special edition models, namely a lot of Golf GTIs with weird looking trim, bodykits, interiors, light conversions, digital dashes etc. A lot of them looked quite different to the car they were based on!

I was just wondering if anyone knows where there might be some pictures of them online, or even better where I can get the book?

Cheers, Matthew.

Thanks for the posts guys but they weren't CitiGolfs,

More like special edition Mk2 Golfs, I believe some of them were done by certain tuning companies for VW.

Some of them looked awful mind, with 'futuristic' 80s bodykits (think Star Wars)

Vw made a version of the mk1 golf for south Africa and brazil. The citi golf.

That's the only one that I am aware of. I was shown one of these when I worked for vw a few years ago, unless they have released one since then.

A couple of rarer MK 2 golfs include the Snchro (4 wheel drive), G60 (suprecharged), Fire & Ice edition ( I think this was supercharged with an unusual interior), The Rallye,(left hand drive supercharged with bodykit, The country ( a raised 3 wheel drive version) & there was another 2litre 16valve 4 wheel drive version which had a grill with a blue surround, but I can't rememnber the name of it

Corrado Campaign - only 6 made (mauve paint, reddish leather interior and different wheels IIRC).

ETA: Sorry, they were released in the UK smile

Limited is correct but it didn't have a 2L 16v in it, it was a 1.8 16v G60 supercharged engine with circa 215hp. There were only 71 made and only 2 were made in 2 door form which were for the directors at VW.

The Fire & Ice was available with 8v, 16v an G60 engines, all cars had a strange purple/blue interior.

There was also a very limited run of GTI countrys, which combined the jack up chassis from the country an a GTI engine.

The 1987 Golf Pikes Peak car is a awesome piece of kit and i guess there is only the one in existence which is in the VW Museum. It is the first twin engine golf a short while before the likes of Dubsport made them more popular in the 90s. VW also made twin engined Jettas (Jetta JET i think it was called) and Scirrocos to.

Another personal fave is the Golf A59 - VWs attempt at getting back into rallying after the original Golf Rallye. The A59 is a mk3 golf but with a very mk4 esque bodykit on it, permanent 4x4, a 2.0 16v Turbo. With a standard bonnet on it could be quite the sleeper...

BUT, i think the rarest of golfs is this crazy hybrid, part mk2 golf country with a mk1 golf cabriolet body chucked on top and built buy Fiat...the Golf Biagini.

Rare would be the Stoll coupe, which was a one off based on the Beetle. Or a Hebmuller, or a Schim, or a Kubel. One of 70 Golfs, that's common tongue out
