Toyota MR2 Mk2's can be picked up cheap now. There RWD and even the non turbo modles can do 0-60 in around 7-8 seconds in think and can return 35mpg if driven carefully

RWD? Jag XJ6 3.2 Manual.

But for less than 1.5k I doubt they'll be doing 35MPG or 8 seconds very often, more like 0MPG and on their ar$e! hehe

MX-5 .. it took this long? An early 1.6 Mk1 with the full power 115hp engine not 90hp later ones but without the really early dodgy front crank pulley.. do a little tweaks or find an unloved supercharger at that price and under 8secs should be doable. They were lighter and a fair bit more economical but 35mpg is possible on a decent cruise which later ones fail to reach. Near 20 year old so little TLC required but depreciation proof and a hoon.

E36 323 should fit the bill, 35mpg is do-able on dual carriageways / motorways.

He didn't state RWD in his first post until he edited it. The 106 GTI has a 0-60 time of 7.4, you should know being an owner of one - http://www.evo.co.uk/carreviews/cardata/?cat=super...

MGF VVC?

Have quite the reputation but get a good one, look after it and it'll be grand. Mines awesome, hard to have more fun at the money tbh!

I got one to run about in and very shocked at how good it is on fuel. 25mpg most of the time and on a run just over 30mpg as for £1500 you can get a really nice one for that much? 114k miles on my one with history and a LOT less than £1500 done 3000 miles so far 100% hassle free.

So basically not actually capable of averaging 35+mpg then, even less if you use it's 8 sec 0-60mph ability.

That's probably not a bad suggestion tbh.
