My friend and I are hopefully taking part in a European road trip through France, Luxembourg, Switzerland, Italy, Austria and Slovakia to Bratislava over the course of a few days in Summer.

More details can be found here.

So we're after a car, as cheap and fun as possible. By cheap I mean cheap. The plan is either to get to Bratislava then drive back, or scrap it/flog it for whatever we can get and fly home.

I feel like my 106 GTi would be awesome through some of the nice roads we'll undoubtedly encounter however I don't want the worry and risk of taking my own car.

So, open to any suggestions - extra points for fun/classic/banger appeal I suppose....

Cheers!

Edit: The car has to be as close as possible to £250

I did something similar a few years ago. Found a Saab 9000 Turbo Auto on eBay for £130, gave it an oil change and a couple of bits and pieces, and off it went. It came back in one piece, just about smile

I'd go for something like...

XR2i
205 GTI
Saxo VTR

Old 5 series? Possibly a 3ltr straight 6?

What about an old Volvo 760 (i think) turbo? My mate has one, great fun, rwd, boost wound up... done.

Diesel Shogun, can get them for under £1000 if you look.

Should be reliable and ok on fuel. Not the most dynamic drive, but 4x4's have their own charm to drive. But loads of space (esp with a LWB one), you're high up so will see more and it's AWD ability might allow you to explore a few places you'd not try with a car.

How can you possibly say that and then next comment down suggest a £1000 diesel Shogun?!

confused

I'm sorry? In what way would an M5 likely be cheap compared to my suggestion?

Also I think £1k is cheap for a car to go across Europe in and I did say under, so £500-800 would count wink

Rover 620 / 623 - don't laugh too loud, very comfortable cars and really a honda accord in drag with a honda engine rather than a K series.

I also once bought an L reg mondeo 2.0 with a 143bhp engine in it that was no slouch and shouldn't cost much to insure. Pretty good handling in those mondeos too. Paid £200 for the car, sold it for £120 a year or two later.

Saabs, as mentioned. Also look at volvo V40s - ride isn't brilliant, but they're pretty robust and very reliable. And cheap.

Stay away from old lagunas / 406s. You'll be lucky to get out of the UK before something goes wrong. <Awaits screams of anti-frog abuse from those with french cars, but ALL of my mates with a pug / renault have had major issues.>

I agree that the M5 wouldn't be cheap but suggesting a Shogun when the OP clearly wants a fun car?!

OP> You don't say how cheap but how bout a Proton Satira GTi? sub £1000, decent handling and reliability?

I think it could still be fun. As said 4x4's have a different charm about them and despite being slower can often be grin inducing to throw about abit. But I guess it's one of those things you either get or don't get.

Also they have other benefits too, such as seeing more. The entire trip won't be a non stop hoon, so greater visibility might well be nice. And the ability to leave the Tarmac should you need/want too.

Awesome little car, brothers mrs had one for a bit and we always enjoyed taking it out for a quick blast. Nice Recaro's too.
