Just to be different it's a 'what two cars' thread wink

We are currently a 1 car family (leon cupra r) but I'm about to start a new job that is far enough away that car sharing with my wife is no longer an option. Initially we were just going to buy a small family run around for her, but I've started having second thoughts.

My Leon is now getting a little long in the tooth (8 years old) and is reaching the point where it is starting to cost a fair bit to maintain. It has terrible MPG for short journeys (low 20s) and seems to get through a set of front tyres every 10k.

My current thinking is to swap the Leon for a 4/5 year old low mileage Focus (£6k seems to get some good choices) which will be the Family run around and to get a 5/6 year old Mini Cooper S for me (£7-8k for lowish mileage 57 plates seems to be about right). The mini would seem to offer me the fun I need from a car with the advantages of having a pretty good reliability record and cheaper running costs.

So my budget for the two cars is £14k, can anyone think of better choices ?

old supercharged cooper s are going to use more fuel than your leon cupra I would guess.

It won't be a supercharged one at that age, from what I have read people are getting 35 to 40 mpg.

Need 4 seats in both cars, so mx5s are out and I was hoping for a cheaper to run car so subarus are out too.

35 on the nose was what mine did on all but extended hoons, even when not hooning I didn't hang about wink.

Good little cars, I enjoyed mine and only sold it because it was a bit on the small side and at the time I only had access to one car.

At that age, no, it wouldn't be a supercharged one, it'd be an R56 turbo, and yes, you'll get nearer 40mpg.

I'd love to know where you're seeing them at that price.
Yes, got that a bit wrong the ones I was looking at were 06 plates :
