Adrenaline is a hormone produced by the adrenal gland in the body of many animals. When it is produced in the body it stimulates the heart-rate, dilates blood vessels and air passages, and has a number of more minor effects. Adrenaline is naturally produced in high-stress or physically exhilarating situations.

Mine was during mine teens; taking a ride in a dyno verified 450bhp Escort Cosworth Lux such a amazing experience, up until this point the most powerful car that I had been driven in was my fathers Jaguar XJ6 3.2 so quite a step up then! From recollection the real hit came as the car came on full boost in 3rd gear; totally recalibrating my sense of speed carrying all the way through 3rd gear untill the change into 4th which was met with a deafing explosion and then with another unrelenting surge of power carrying us towards the horizon; no words could describe the experience it was just a pure adrenaline hit that I would continue to chase until this day. If anything it was this experince that really sparked my passion in motoring; I guess that I owe alot to the old cossie then?
So does this arouse memories of your 1st motoring adrenaline hit? Maybe it was a edgy moment on the track or a passenger ride you will never forget! Please share will be interesting to hear everyones experiences!

First real one was on my DAS (motorbike learners course for those of you unacquainted with such things). Instructor trying to encourage us to keep pace up in cornering says 'follow me and keep up through these corners'. At that moment a car made a horrendously dangerous overtake and the instructor took off after him.

Well.. he said keep up.. I remember going through those corners and finding it was no longer a case of looking sideways, but up to look through the corner smile

Motorbikes are cool.

I've been sat in the back seat of an Evo 9 FQ 360 (with 2 others!) on a b-road at 150mph.

Driver doesn't have a licence anymore...

14 years old..flying through the air over a stone wall after I had crashed a motor bike into it in Ireland. Missed the wall, but not the face plant in a cow pat.

160mph at night on my old bike with friend on his doing the same speed when we plough straight into thick fog. He immediately lets off the throttle and because of the huge air-brake effect I almost went right into the back of him, narrowly missing his bike by millimetres. I can remember shouting fkKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK inside my helmet and thinking I was so so stupid, and lucky to be alive.

Riding a 40 year old Enfield motorcycle with dodgy 6v electrics through the jungle at breakneck speed in the pitch dark with no headlights on a dirt road whilst being chased by a bunch of angry Indians with guns in a Tata jeep shooting at me.

Adenauer forst on a VFR750 provided me with the biggest adrenalin hit I'm ever likely to experience short of something genuinely life threatening. Made me realise I couldn't do on a bike what I could in a car..........

Does getting out of aeroplanes count?

If it's just the "smell of fear" you want, how about snapping the stub axle off a kart* while going about 60mph?

  • for non-mechanical types, a stub axle is what the front wheel attaches to. When it snaps, the wheel falls off, and the kart becomes hard to control. This is bad if you're cornering hard at 60mph...

many car moments! remember hitting a hump back bridge far too fast in my old 306... felt like a good foot off the ground! luckily the landing was smooth.

Other than that the first time i span my wheels on public roads... that was a heart in moth moment! wheelspining at 50mph in 3rd is a little frightening!

Travelling alittle to quickly through a small village, approaching a blind bend where the road narrowed and brick Walls either side. Just before I got to the bend a jcb four trac came into view. 'twas about 4 car lengths infront of me when I slamed the anchors on. Managed to stop just in time to avoid contact and allow room for the jcb to get past. Phew! That was alittle close for comfort. I still carried on as before the close call, I was abit of a muppet back then.

Biggest adrenaline hit in the car when it went into a small 4-wheel drift on a large radius NSL rounabout I had gone into a little too fast considering the road was damp. It probably looked like nothing from the outside, but it was the first time I had experienced having to reduce steering input mid-corner and I wasn't really expecting it, certainly got my heart going!

(That sounds lame reading it back...ah well)

The biggest adrenaline hit I have ever experience makes the above pale into insignificance. It came around about 3 milliseconds after launch on my first ride of "Rita: Queen of Speed" at Alton Towers. I knew that 0-60 in 2.5secs would be quick, but not that quick. I got off with a weird tingling sensation in my arms and legs that stayed for around 30 mins afterwards hehe
