Found out today that my perfectly good 2001 Euro III emissions compliant diesel Transit 300 work van (only 100,000 miles on it), which I have owned for 6 years and serviced and maintained to the book, will no longer be allowed to be driven in the London LEZ where I live and work. So effectively scrap for me as of 3rd January 2012, 9 months time. Makes me sick this stupid politically correct society want to charge me £200 PER DAY if I dare use it in the zone after that date. And the zone is basically anywhere inside the M25, not just central London like the congestion charge. wkers. So I now need at least £7k to buy a newer van to comply.Or £20k for a new one. If this goes ahead, MAJOR problems for small businesses like me. In all honesty the van has only 2 or 3 years life left in it, so I would have though just leaving the law as it is will allow natural wastage of medium size vans , very rarely do these vehicles reach 13+ years of age in significant numbers. Cue in London used van prices through the roof for Euro IV compliant ones. It's not as if my van belches black smoke out of it, it runs sweetly and is Euro III compliant. I am sure there must be a useless un-elected MEP who could take my case up on Human Rights laws or something?? I am sure they must be breaking the European law somewhere over-ruling Euro rules meaning the van is fine to drive in 99% the rest of Europe. Blood is boiling.

While I understand that it's very annoying, and, in my opinion, fairly unnecessary, I think it was announced last summer that this was going to happen.

Sell your van as soon possible. Plenty of people never travel into London, so would be quite willing to buy it.

You can get aftermarket DPF filters to ensure your vehicle qualifies.

No idea of the cost - but it's the best route available to you, and will enhance the 2nd hand value of the van when you sell it on.

2 grand plus 450 to have them tested.

I'll be losing a couple of vans too, and there'll be another LEZ jump in 2016.
YOu could always try selling it in another city, only London involved in this scheme.

£250 per day fine if you're over the limit incidentally.

The truck I drive is a Euro 5 and will be replaced in a couple of years with a Euro 6 model.

No skin of my nose as I don't pay for it and the upside is I get a new truck every couple of years. \0/

Being in business means you incur costs and ever stricter Euro emission's for vehicles have been known about for years...dunno what the OP is whinging about.

In response to "dunno what the OP is whinging about" I'll tell you.

No offence, but you sound like you are a P.A.Y.E lorry driver, probobly for a large business, and fortunately probobly don't have to worry where the funds for your new lorry come from. But for thousands of small business owners like myself, with less than 5 employees, things like this are a MASSIVE deal. Take something like a Ford Transit, of which there must be tens of thousands of the registered and used inside the M25. What Transport For London has done is unilatterally decide to outlaw effectively EVERY Ford Transit OVER 5 YEARS OLD from inside the M25. A direct new replacement fir mine I configured on the Ford website last night and it came out at £27,500.... The Ford dealer today told me to get in quick as they are selling every used van they can get their hands on for top money, they are paying top money at auction and are expecting so many used vans not Euro IV compliant to be on the market by autumn that they will be pretty much wothless. If you cannot read into that the worry for thousands and thousands of small businesses in Greater London that rely on medium sized vans to operate from florists, greengrocers, couriers, plumbers, decorators, scout groups with their minibusses, dial-a-ride charities for elderly people etc. then you are lucky. To me, Euro compliancy means compliancy full stop at time of manufacture, and the thought TFL have the power to over-rule European law when no vehicles at point of registration were "lifed" in certain cities in the UK sets a dangerous precedence for the future. When we have to sell straight bananas and cucumbers due to Euro maniacs and then just put up with our government raising fuel prices willy-nilly , in the name of being "green" it seems you can get away with anything.

Agreed.

A few friends had theirs done when this was first announced a year or so ago. Not ideal, but it means they can continue to use their vehicles.

Is there any way of organising a protest/demonstration amongst tradesmen, drivers etc to highlight how much this green nonsense is damaging the working man? ie is there an easy way of contacting other people in a similar situation to you?

Why don't you all accidentally meet in london and break down in some unfortunately inconvenient place. it would be very unfortunate if the whole of london was to grind to a complete halt more than usual

I feel for you, but good news for people outside of London at least.

Who on earth thinks up these ridiculous bits of gold plated legislation? I thought the job of the government and european parliament was to act in the interest of the people they represent. Why is this country so obsessed with being the first to implement the lamest and most restrictive bits of legislation? We are like the teachers pet, the laughing stock of the rest of Europe who just sit back and ignore it.

Whose interest is it in to restrict the use of perfectly good modern vehicles? Is there clear evidence that diesel particulates are at a level that is causing problems? And why does it only apply to London? If all the other cities in the world are fine without it I'm sure London isn't going to suffocate.

I feel your pain mate. It's utterly bonkers.

I'd be very annoyed too. Do these rules just cover "Diesel" vans?

One thing to be worried about is looking at the website it's just a matter of time before they try it with cars.

How about £450 to have it tested and £200 to have it fitted and rented for a day? watch this space.

My meticulously maintained 07 vito effectively becomes scrap in 2016 then.. when it'll have covered 54,000 miles. how eco-fking friendly.

Yet another cost increase for proper tradesmen like me, while not affecting all the bodgerski's who typically use cars. great. I think within a few years all you'll be able to get in the way of tradesmen will be the big rip-you-off concerns or unqualified bodgers- there's just too many costs and not enough profit left in trying to walk the middle ground. Certainally in London.

I've just put a notional 2000 Land Rover Discovery TD5 through the 'Am I Affected?' wizard on the LEZ page and it appears to be banned. Conversely a 2000 Land Rover Discovery V8 is not banned. Gonna be a lot of angry diesel 4x4 owners soon. . . . . .

But if you buy a "classic" old diesel landrover you will be allowed in !!!!

I just tried my van on the LEZ compliance website.
It's an 03 transit 2.4 rwd and it passed. Which was quite surprising as it very rarely gets above 20 mpg.

Pick ups will also be banned including double cabs which have soured in popularity in the last 5 years.
