Right my sister seems to have totally blown away the idea of running the other halfs car on a shoestring for a year until after the wedding and getting a 1 series or such and after taking her clio for an MOT she has set her heart on a scenic they have there.

now personally I really don't like these cars but I'm trying to set aside my feelings for them for now!

The car itself is a 2007 57 RENAULT SCENIC 2.0 VVT Privilege with 15K on the clock, ex mobility scheme car and seems very well kept with history, interior still very nice with the cream half leather, and seems pretty well priced at £6K (we have also dealt with this garage many times and they are pretty much as trust worthy as they get, plus I think the guy fancys my sister hehe so not too worried about things being dodgy on the car so much.

now putting aside my dislike for these cars are there anything that she should be looking out for on these? any known PITA faults? rough MPG?

would really appreciate any info!

cheers

Jon

Guy at work has had a few as company cars, they have been pretty reliable but all have had problems with letting in water at various seals. Might be worth checking the carpets by hand for dampness etc because even if it doesn't lead to any serious issues the steaming up can be a pain.

Get the ford, you would be daft to buy the Scenic.

tbh not overly keen on the ford either, for her it would be a pre facelift one which just lack and kind of quality about them. but then this isn't down to me, there's loads of other options that I could put in front of her but that I think would be better but its her choice, I just want to know if the scenic's have any nastys hiding to slap a big bill in her face, things like the electronic handbrake just scream money to me! give me a bloody handle to lift!

Really it makes no sense for her to buy a car now, she wont have any kind of family for at least another 18months min. so no need for a bigger car, the megane they run at the moment just passed its MOT having 300quid spent on it. she has a wedding to pay for next feb and her clio is fine and dandy. She just seems paranoid that the megane is going to suddenly die as its gone over 100K and then shes going to have to rush and find a car and it not be as good as this one. but to me you run the megane till its dead as its as worthless today as it will be in 12 months.

Check all the electrics. Window regulators will fail, it's just a case of when.

Window regulators and instrument panels are a weak point.
There are Renault schemes in place though offering a fixed substantial contribution even on vehicles out of warranty. (Its £100 for new instrument panel at your local dealer, used to be £400+).

Cambelt will be expensive on a 2.0 (5yrs / 72k on this one)
It won't be the best on fuel, expect high 20's urban, worse if its an auto..

The 2.0 VVT isn't very efficient. If possible I'd find a 1.5/1.9 dCi.

I wouldn't touch a Scenic with somebody else's bargepole. The 2.0s are quite inefficient too, mid 20s will be the norm.

Yes economy looked bad to me on 1st glance aswell, found out mot combined is 35 so in real world probably about 30! Will give all those items a good check over thanks guys.

Whilst on the subject what would you recommend for a 5 door that could cope with a kid? Personaly for her I think if she waited a year she could pick up a facelift ceed diesel with 5years warranty left and they feel so much nicer than the Renault! Main thing she wants is to feel safe after having someone crash head on into her a few years back. So can't be anything too old.

Peugeot 308, a genuinely good car in my opinion. Well screwed together, cracking engines, refined, comfortable, safe and good value for money.

If you just want a car that's fit for purpose, why not buy a Focus, there are tons to choose from and they are a pretty good steer, I recommended one to my non-petrolhead brother and he has been delighted with it.

If she is paranoid about 100k milage and it is close take her car away for a week and hide it. Get the milage "corrected" and engine steam cleaned. Return car and tell her when you return it you have had a new engine fitted.

I've also mentioned the focus to her, been to see the car today and whilst it is nice (for a scenic) it still just seems wrong for her, taking her out tommorrow to look at some other hatch back size cars rather than MPV and hopefully show her sense!
