Do you have a weekend car?

Just wondering, for those lucky enough to have a second car, what do you have?

Also, how do you cope with the practicalities - garaging, twice the insurance, twice the maintenance etc.?

I'll start - I don't think I'll ever be in a position to run a second car, so whatever I drive has to do me 15k a year to work and back without making me want to rip my teeth out through boredom.

Ended up in a bit of a mess with money last year so I'm currently stuck with a diesel Mundaneo. I hate it with a passion, but it costs absolute peanuts to run, and I should be in a position to change it in another year or so.

Have a very dull 2003 Polo 1.9 diesel which does my weekly commute. It's not even the turbo diesel model.

But it's extremely reliable and *touchwood* never lets me down.






Then for the weekends is our 1972 TVR Vixen. Extremely hard work to own, but so joyous when you press the loud pedal and the reaction from people is fantastic to it.

So yeah, probably lucky, but always broke.

I have a fairly dull 530i touring for the daily drive, and a Cerbera for the weekend.

I like the daily to be dull and wafty as it is my own personal relaxation retreat during the week. Driving the TVR all the time would be a bit too much like hard work, and remains special when I do get in it.

I bought a 360 3 years ago and have to say it's been 100% reliable, started first turn after 3 months this morning. Cambelts are the sole expense, about £600 when I purchased and due soon again.
Trip to france last year and it did more than 25mpg.

The cheapest way to run 2 cars is to have older cars,

• Lower depreciation
• Lower road tax
• Lower insurance

I reckon there's never been a better time to run 2 older cars for the cost of 1 newer car. Bear in mind that fuel cost is "zero" since you'd probably be out in the other car anyway!

Well, it should be reliable if you never use it!!

I just don't see the point of a car that's not used. If the car doesn't fit your lifestyle it's often best not to bother with it at all.

I have a 'summer' and a 'winter' car.
The winter car is a run of the mill Ford KA, which I actually quite like peversely.

The summer car is a '70 Alfa Spider.

The reason I say summer and winter cars, is because I dont have to do a commute when I am home, as soon as the salt is off the roads, the Alfa comes out, and I drive it everywhere. Its just great. I cant get enough of it and really miss it in the winter.

Next leave she is going to come out of the garage, and I can not wait!

I've got a Fiesta Sportvan (basically the same as a zetec s) all paid for by work and a Racing Puma for my weekend toy car, lives in my parents garage during the week. So luckly for me I don't have to deal with paying out twice for everything, if I didn't have the van though I would have to get rid of the FRP as it can be a bit thirsty and is a pain to drive in slow traffic.

I use too. But insurance costs (i am 20), became a killer. looking over £1000 for each car. Have a megane F1 and it does everything.

Got a couple of cheapies but it is nice to get in something different after a daily 70 mile commute,my commuter car is a 05 C2 VTS,not the best motorway cruiser i,ll agree but i got waylaid in the search for a C4 diesel.My weekend car is a lightly modified 03 Xsara VTS.I just keep them t&ted all year round and lucky enough to have room to keep both off road.

TVR Chimaera 5 litre as the toy - pic in my profile. Passat diesel for dog use and B&Q/Wickes runs etc..

Garage - well we have a double garage but only the TVR is garaged, the other half of the garage is full of junk. Enough driveway for about 6 cars all in so that's not a problem.

Insurance - now I am an old git the TVR insurance is less than 1/3 of what it was when I first bought her. So both cars are insured for less than half of what I used to pay for just the TVR.
Maintenance? It's not nice. But then we don't drink or smoke, that's my excuse...

I run a nine year old Alfa 165 as my daily snotter.

Also have a Jimny on knobbly tyres for the winter.

And an old Esprit and an even older Seven for fun.

And a £275 Micra for special occasions.

So far, my wife's Focus has cost the more in depreciation and repairs than the other five put together.

If I had more garage space, I would also like a Citroen 2CV, a Mini 1275GT, a Series 2 Land Rover and a JZR Trike.

I am not the least bit interested in modern cars, or even particularly fast cars.

Old cars are cheap to buy, cheap to fix, cheap to insure and some are even going up in value.

And they are miles more fun.

I suppose I could sell all of my cars and buy a BMW 330, but then I would die of boredom.

Life must be terrible for you ..

Don't really have a weekend car as such. Classic car (classic car insurance, garage). Practical car. I suppose the London Travelcard is my third car .. can travel on it pissed (and often on piss), in bad weather and it rarely breakdowns.

I said boring daily driver and weekend car.

Daily is an Audi A6 3.0 Le Mans Quattro (its quite good and reasonably swift) but I called it boring

Weekend which I sometimes use for work trips as well is TVR Tuscan

Weekend car doesn't cost a huge amount to run as it does a low mileage and I do basic jobs myself. All 3 family cars are insured on one policy which means that the Tuscan only costs £200 pa to insure. Tuscan lives in my small garage the rest outside.

I drive 25k miles a year of which 5k are in the Tuscan.

I had to save to buy the weekend car and got lucky with the G33 which I sold for 3 x what it cost me to buy. I used the proceeds to buy the Tuscan.

I'm single with an ex & 2 kids, I earn <30k a year and have a Mortgage. I have to do all my own work on all of the cars, I go without a lot of other stuff to keep them. I get sub-trade prices on parts through good friends and anything I can't buy I have to adapt or make. Insurance wise I have a trade policy that covers me on anything and I have a drive, garage, street parking and very patient neighbours! Fuego doesnt need tax/MOT, its not road legal.

Smoker- R19 TD. Ridiculously cheap to run.



Weekend- R21 Turbo Quadra. Super sleeper.



Track- Renault Fuego. Made of tinfoil, lots of power. Weapons grade fun.

I have a MKIV Fiesta as a daily commuter, and a Monaro for weekend and holidays etc.

It works out cheaper to run the two of them (10,000 miles in the Fiesta and 2-3000 in the Monaro), than doing all 13k in the Monaro.

I just got rid of my daily driver - the uber comfy but very dull/bland Legacy SE Auto Saloon, and still have my daily driver (911 TT Cab) and a Kawasaki Z750......

My mileage has halved now but being on my own am still going to get something cheap and cheerful to replace the Subaru with for tip runs, shopping and really bad weather etc......

Daily driver - 118d SE, which is actually fun to drive, although I clicked 'boring' for the poll.

Weekend warrior - Forester STI (see profile pic if you're wondering what the heck that is) which replaced a Z4M Roadster. Baby and wife wouldn't both fit in the Z4M making its weekend use rather redundant once the nipper came along!
