What should I get for my car as scrap? Or should I save it?

I've got an E34 525i SE Touring Auto with cream leather which in is not too bad nick but is SORN on the in-law's drive after being stood a few months. It was running fine when I last used it apart from a fuel leak which I have not had a chance to trace.

The battery is dead and I failed to jump start it, so I was thinking of just having it scrapped as I've heard the value of scrap is high at the moment.

What you reckon?

ETA: Change that it's a 525 NOT a 535.

When my Dad's V6 Vectra was beyond economical repair we put it on Ebay with a £99 reserve. We got slightly more than scrap value for it.

How high do you think the value of scrap is currently?

It will be worth more to someone as is if the only issue is a fuel leak and a dead battery.....surely.

Save it, the fuel leak could be just a perished rubber hose, can't remember fuel tank rusting being a problem on E34s
Sides that, it's a 3.5 touring, ideal tow car for anything like a race mini / formula ford thing on the cheap smile

Sounds like an ideal candidate for eBay or retro rides to me. Get it started and running, see if the fuel leak is an easy fix. If you're confident of it's integrity then put an MOT on it to triple it's value. Don't scrap it, the world is becoming increasingly short of interesting cars.

+1

You cannot scrap it, they are far to good for that.

I got £170 for a Mondeo I towed to the scrapyard yeserday, I suspect you'll get about £200 for the BMW.

I wouldn't've scrapped the BMW though...

E34 535i Touring?

Are you sure?

As far as I'm aware the 'big six' M30 didn't make it into the touring as standard

Don't scrap it! It's a great car, sounds like it needs a couple of hundred spending on it to get it going again, but its worth it!

Scrapping an E34 Touring will lead to bad automotive karma.

Pop it up on ebay and link it on the barge threads on here. Either that or spend a day fixing it. Sounds like a small bit of work and £100 and you'll have a decent barge

Not sure what the value for scrap was - I was hoping someone on here might have an idea.

I have heard that the plastic fuel tank can split and if so they're so expensive to replace it's pretty much a write-off. But it could just be a hose - it wasn't a massive leak.

I'm also worried I may have caused some more "issues" trying to start it - there was a puff of smoke from behind the engine when it was trying to turn over, then it wouldn't even try.

I've decided to have another go at getting it started tomorrow on my day off. I'm just struggling to find the time to sort it with a baby taking up all our time.

Don't scrap an E34. Neither of the problems sound too bad tbh!

also, if you scrapped it you'd be better off removing the leather and selling it separately im sure you'd get at least £100 for a decent leather interior, maybe £200?

Don't scrap it! I'm sure if you stick it on ebay or in the local rag someone would give you more than scrap value for it.

I just weighed in a E34 530i M30 and even with a lot of the parts removed it still fetched £200. Scrap is at £150 per ton at the moment. Where are you?

Damn....a bit too far for me. If you scrap it make sure you take it over the weighbridge yourself and it should weigh in at about 1450 kgs.
