Why deploy BOTH/all air bags?

...when there is only the driver? is this a manufacturers con trick to make repairs more expensive?
Yes, I would have thought that my car being able to tell there is a front passenger and bonging at me until they put their belt on it would be able to tell not to deploy the airbags...Maybe it does. I don't want to find out...
They tend not to.
The airbag control computer analyses data as the crash happens and decides whether to deploy specific airbags or not. Even a high speed crash may not result in airbag deployment if the forces aren't high enough.
Airbag deployment carries it's own risk -passengers can be burnt by them. It's also in the manufacturers interest NOT to deploy all the airbags in every accident: the costs with replacing parhaps 6-12 airbags from a minor shunt would push the car up a few insurance groups, and make it less desirable.
Generally modern cars will deploy only the airbags required. If it deploys all of them, then the increased repair cost is likely to be offset by the lower personal injury cost. If a cars been that well crashed, I'm not sure it should be back on the road anyway.
I don't know why you think every air bag does go off? Source?

I'd rather have all airbags deploy and not be needed that not have an airbag deploy which is needed....... Plus I would have hoped they could also assist with flying glass etc.If you have a crash that has required airbags then the last thing you should be worrying about is the car.
Rather a costly repair than a face full of steering wheel and instrument panel.
Just be thankful that they are there and prey you never need them and then if you do that they do their job.
Id prefer that they all be out,if I`m bouncing around the inside airbags are softer than dashboards and door panels.
my volvo has umpteen,if I crash hard enough I could probably die from air displacemant
