BMW 1 Series no service history, HELP

Hi all

Im in the process of changing from my IS200 to something a bit smaller, in seen a 116 advertised, iv been to see this car, its a 2005 (05) 35,000 miles, its an independant local dealer, who has no service book for said car, however has reciepts/invoices etc. its up for £6995

Is there anyway of checking if this car has a service history? as iv read around that there is a centralised BMW system that holds records?

The registration is NU05 XAE

Any help would be greatley appreciated

Give your local dealership a call, give them the registration number and say you're interested but concerned about the service history. They will give you a run down of all the info they have on their computers.

I would probably ring up a franchised dealer and ask them the question. I don't work in a service department but if I was thinking of getting this car I would start with a dealer.

I'm sure someone much more knowledgeable will be along to help soon. There have been other threads on this subject.



On a different note, it sounds a little bit strange that they have invoices and receipts, but no service book. Depends what you are after I suppose but I would like to see a bit of history with a car in this price range.

And if it does have a history on the system, you can send a new service booklet to the dealership(s) and get it stamped retrospectively

Not sure about BMW, but not all use service books now. M.Benz haven't for several years, it's all on their computers. No service book anymore, although they will give you a print out if you ask.

Ring BMW HQ - they will confirm who and where, and then you can call those garages for the detail (they may be reluctant to give it until it is your car).

Personally I think there are far too many cars of this ilk about to be pissing about with cars with no service book. The fact a garage cant be fu*ked to sort this out before selling it should tell you all you need to know. Not to mention the fact that they cant be arsed to photograph it, or write a half decent advert. Jog on.

Additionally the 16i engine is hateful. You have to drive it so hard to get anything out of it you may as well have got a bigger engine. The small 4cyl bm petrol engines are their worst at the moment - I'd be looking at 118d/120d for better performance and economy....

Get the document reference number from the current MOT certificate and plug it in here:

This will give you all the old MOTs, pass or fail, along with the names of the garages which carried them out. Give each one a call and ask if they have any records for your prospective purchase. That's what I did with my current steed, and I've managed to build up a fairly comprehensive picture of its history because of this.

Save yourself the time and ballache, and pick one of the loads of other ones out there, there's hardly a shortage of them.

no point chasing this when there are so many examples out there with FSH. Save yourself the aggro and worry over if the car has FSH or not.

FFS, not every car in the world has been clocked. Calm down.

Firstly, do check to make sure it doesn't have the tell tale signs of a heavily worn interior before you waste your time on it. It's a 35k mile car, I'm guessing it's low on owners. Ask the dealer for the V5 and call them. The dealer shouldn't mind, if they bang on about data protection then find another.

On the receipts there should be details of where it was serviced. Call them and ask. In my experience service managers often remember cars and may give you some background. I called a small Renault franchise once and they remembered my car having a very high spec and an odd stain on the seat which they couldn't remove. Either way, there will be information on the system regarding the car's life there and probably all the history it has through the dealer network.
