I've some stupid stories about motorists getting pulled over by plod for trivial thing:
Such as the case of the Evil-criminal mastermind who was caught taking a sip out of a bottle of water whilst stopped at traffic lights!!!!

Or the guy who was eating a kitkat whilst behind the wheel, even though his wife had unwrapped it for him!!

BUT - I've never heard anyone getting pulled over for smoking behind the wheel? Surely it's more dangerous than using a mobile phone, especially when trying to light it! The things on fire!, yet it seems perfectly acceptable to smoke whilst driving! Why?

because we smokers are - and this is important so pay attention - VICTIMS of addiction and as such, to stop us for smoking at the wheel would amount to persecution for which there would no doubt be legal retribution against the police force involved..

My name is Matt and I am a smoker.

But, not in the car. However this isnt for safety reasons but I dont like the idea of fag ash over navy blue carpets!

Personally, when it comes to smoking and driving I cant really see the harm in it. Lighting it up or dropping it are probably the only really unsafe times.

I reckon mobiles and make up are way more dangerous on the whole. Make up because it requires real concentration to apply, well the looks on their when they do it seem to lead to that conclusion and mobiles because you are concentrating on the conversation, not holding the phone. Smoking on the other hand requires no concentration at all.

Matt.

I remember travelling down the A303 to the SouthWest in a friend's Lotus Esprit S4S....after lighting a ciggy he then dropt it between his legs!!!

Good job the road was quiet and there are plenty of lay-bys. We both thought it was hilarious at the time, but looking back his frantic searching between his legs could have killed us both (and anyone in our way).

I do remember a couple of years ago at Richmond Park my mother-in-law got one of her roll-ups swiped straight out of her mouth by a swan, who clearly thought it was food. Then the bloody thing did a runner before we could catch it, with fag smoke coming out of both it's nostrils....

A quick dip in a nearby pond and it was okay. Seeing as they're owned by the Crown, that's probably any honour or decoration down the pan.....

The gov'ment is hardly going to bad smoking whilst driving are they ..... it's nirvana for them - TWO lots of tax at the same time ! Remember Tony only tries to stop things which are either a) fun or b) non revenue generating

I've been pulled over by plod for "accelerating too fast". It was late, pulled away from some lights and floored it in first, accelerating up to 30, and levelling off there. In the opposite queue of traffic I noticed a luminous stripe out of the corner of my eye. Uh oh. Plod, predictably, turns around and follows me...

Aparrently I was a young chap (25 or so at the time) in a powerful car (Mondeo 1.8LX) and if he caught me doing it again, he'd have me for dangerous driving.

I could handle the fact that perhaps due to the lateness of the hour, and the clearly inebriated state of my passenger (finger painting in the condensation under the glass sunroof), he might have wanted to breathalyse me. Fine. But the patronising bullshit really got my goat.

Tosser.

Why shouldn't it have? It's seen the adverts for Swan papers and Swan matches - obviously its god given right

Converse to Marshy, I once got pulled for "braking too hard"! Travelling down to devon on that A road that I cant remember the name of, and lets say I was making progress. Anyway, over the crest of hill and plod is everywhere at an accident at the central reservation.

I brake hard and pull in. A little alarming I must admit, but nothing too dangerous. Anyway, one of them spots me and pulls me at the layby just afterwards. B*llocks me for braking too hard and driving dangerously.... And I mean really lays into me.

Starts going on about that I should have slowed down before when I saw the signs.... Funny thing was there were no signs. I had half the mind to go back and lay into them for not putting them out, but thought that might just get me "known" for this and therefore be targetted.. Tempting, but they have the power and we have none - I just took it and went on....

Oh, and I did check for the little Police signs and they didnt put any of them out - buggers.

Cheers,

Paul

I know of two blokes who work digging holes for McNicolas in central london they got pulled one night in the Pikies Cabriolet (Transit Tipper) complete with mini digger on trailer for "kerb crawling" round Kings Cross looking for the road they were meant to be digging up.

I got pulled over for going round a corner too fast. It was in town and I was turning right at some lights. Didn't spot the plod when I pulled away... only when the blues went. D'oh Got the usual patronising speech, car checked over, then they wanted to breathalise me. But, they had no bag so they radioed for another which took 10 minutes. In the meantime a traffic cop came along for a chat. So there was I parked up on the main road through the town, getting breathalised(sp?) with 3 plodmobiles and six coppers.

A short while ago I was stationary in a queue at some traffic lights minding my own business. A copper on a bike came past me then turned round and followed me when the lights went green. Being in a load of traffic I had little opportunity to commit any offences even if I had wanted too, yet he decided to pull me over half a mile up the road.

When I enquired as to why he’d pulled me over, the only reason he could come up with was because I “was driving a performance car”. This is no joke, this was THE ONLY reason he had stopped me. He then went through all the usual checking driving licence and insurance crap so as to waste as much of my time as possible.

It appears that Northants police no longer have to wait for you to actually commit an offence, they can now pull you over simply for driving a fast car!

I got stopped for alledgedly breaking the speed limit. I wasn't speeding; it was 1am and he caught me up at the lights and I spotted the nic-nic on the roof. Nobody else around, I watched the speedo very carefully.

Played humble and got away with it.

Told the story at work the next day and they had a good laugh. Apparently there was another car, same make and colour which was driven by a loony and it was well known they were trying to get him banned.

I'm pretty sure if they had stopped the car they were after then the speeding charge would have been pushed through. Hearing more about the other driver I think their motives were OK, but their methods left me in shock for a while.

A long time ago I was sitting in my power boat floating off the piers in Bowness Bay, Lake Windermere at about 11 PM waiting for my girlfriend (of the week) to finish work at a bar so that we could go back across the Lake to where I was living. A policeman spotted me floating there (as I was entitled to do displaying the proper navigation lights) and came down to the end of the jetty. He asked me what I was doing so I said I was waiting. He asked me to come alongside the jetty, I asked him why. He said he wanted to talk to me, I said he could talk to me from where he was (about 15 feet away). He asked me again to come alongside the jetty, I said no. He then wandered away powerless to do anything.

It was really satisfying.

If Tony wants to collect more tax he should let us all drive V8s whilst smoking with one hand & drinking alcopops with the other.

My name Cocoa & I have a chocolate addiction, please don't shoot me for eating a Kit Kat.

F&*^ing stupid reason to get pulled. What's more dangerous a loaded chocolate bar or a lit cigarette??

I was once stopped, many years ago for doing 52 in a 60 limit, but looking like I probably was not going to slow down enough when I reached the 30 limit just up the road!

Not an offence, but had to present my documents at the police station etc, which was bloody inconvenient as I was in a loan car from a garage 130 miles away and had to have the insurance sent to me. When they arrived, it became clear that I was not insured under the terms of the small print, but never heard anything...

Lucky thing was, the loan car was a diesel Peugeot 205, my usual car was a Saab Turbo, the original 99, and I would probably been doing a tad more than the 60 limit along that stretch of road any other day!
