So I am doing my final checks for a car I am buying at the weekend, and I remembered on my Autocheck check it gave the option to put in a VIN for a 'deeper' check. I entered the Vin the seller gave me - came back as invalid. So i phoned a dealer where it was serviced to check the VIN - exactly the same, but one digit (seller said it was a '2', dealer a 'Z'). So i try the dealer suplpied Vin in Autocheck - invalid.
Dont really know what to do now. Any advice would be much appreciated!

Get an MOT or the V5 faxed/scanned to you asap.

On the V5 + MOTs - VIN number A
On the screen + under bonnet - VIN number B
They are both very similar, however VIN number B has got an extra 2 digits on (an extra '21') taking it up to 19 digits. Is it a sensible assumption that this is down to DVLA incompetance, or is it more likely to be something sinister?

It'll just be a mistake. As stated above, all (correct) VINs are exactly 17 digits. I had the same problem with a motorbike I got from the Isle Of Man last year. The IoM log book was showing an impossibly short VIN. Took bloody ages to get sorted out - but got there eventually.
Just to be clear, all modern Euro issue vins are 17 digit, Japanese imports and older American cars are not 17 digit.Hi, just wondering if anyone could help? The vin on the documents is nearly the same the difference being:

WV2 - VW van, right? WVW would be VW car. It's entirely possible that the muppet at the dealer originally entered the wrong VIN, having got very used to typing WVW 93 times a day. Likewise with multiple Zs. The G at the end...? Mebbe a check digit? Is there anything that _could_ be a G or 6 on the plate? Mebbe it was on the delivery paperwork that came with the van, which then got dumped on the muppet's desk before being binned once used.V5 + MOT- WVWZZZZ***********G

Plenty of VW VIN decoders on t'internet. But, yes, human error 100%. If the starred characters weren't identical, you start to think ring, but otherwise? Nope, human error. It's survived this far...
Hi, many thanks for your reply, yes its a van, cant see anything on plate that could be a g.I have the same opinion as you, ive been through vw vin decoders, v5 vin to long to put into decoder however if i remove the extra z at the start the result comes up as the same vehicle details as the vin on the vehicle, apart from area in germany where built.
