I'm picking up a car later this week which I'm hoping will be a surprise gift for someone else. What's the best legal way to go about this in terms of the V5/insurance? Should I complete the buyer bit of the V5 with their details and just temporarily insure it like any other car - obviously stating I'm not the registered owner?

If the person is someone that you are likely to be with for a long time, register and insure in their name.

Unless you're married I'd register it in your name.

Seen it go sour way too many times and you'll get burned. Unless gift means gift and you never want it back?

It's not for the girlfriend (she's already got all my money wink ) - it's a proper gift not a loan.
