World oil supplies have at best about 40 Years to go before there's no more. If you factor in increasing usage, esp. In asia, then some estimates are as low as 20 years. Most experts agree that we have already passed the days of earth's peak production.

The the question is, and specifically to anyone who has a half decent collection, when will cars become worthless ? At what point do you jump ship and sell off your F40, your 993rs, your Miura or your beautiful DB5 ? No one will want to be left with a pile of worthless lemons.

Most supercars and collectors cars barely get driven anyway, so the price of oil is moot.

Funny, I was told there was only 20 years left when I was in school, which would have been about oh.. 20 years ago now smile

It's a good point. People in the know may have the foresight to jump ship at the right time, but as soon as rumours get out that supplies are dwindling the value of cars will start to go down. In fact it will probably get to the point when there simply wont be anyone who wants to buy them. I think it will be ultimately unavoidable - many people will lose money and end up with a car which is useless. Then they will all just have to be recycled.

It will be the daily drivers that will not be worth anything. Collectable cars will still have value as they are driven rarrely. It will probably go back to buying petrol by the can for those with such cars.

Virtually all forms of property depreciate, especially big heavy ones. The proportion of cars which are collectible is and will remain pitifully small. Unless the thing is a "work of art", forget it. In other words, if you can't afford a GTO life will be tough.

Anyone holding onto a Bristol thinking it has some great intrinsic value might be well advised to bail out now!

????

You dont have a point here that fits.

When the oil runs out there wont be any oil prices because there wont be any oil. Every car that uses a combustion engine to move forward will be redundant and it wont work. So its got nothing to do with owners, how rich they are, whether they use their supercars or not and oil prices. The point is, apart from a few museum pieces, every single car that uses fossil fuels will be worthless for the simple reason that no one will want it. When will YOU bail ?

As the price increases it becomes worthwhile for the oil companies to extract oil from oilfields that were previously not economically viable.

There's a whole bunch of oil underneath Antarctica too. I think that once the rest runs out the preservation treaties will be ripped up.

WTF? Are you serious or trolling, I'm not sure yet.

There is no way oil will run out in 20, 40 or 60 years. There will always be some oil, maybe a bit less in 100 years, but by then the human race will be using nuclear or fission sources of power.

So there will always be a supply of oil, even if it's synthetic. So those rich people with a collection of cars can buy and use that. Poor people will be driving around in electric cars or hydrogen cell etc.

Remember. The stone age did not end when the stones ran out.
