Selling a registration plate?

I have just acquired a new car and it came with a private registration plate. The buyer told me it was worth £1200. I got in touch with this company - http://www.regtransfers.co.uk/main/sellwithus.asp who said they would sell the plate for me and return me £800.

What are the chances of this happening? Has anybody used this company or a company like it? Are they genuine?

By sell they mean put it on their database and hope that someone comes along who wants your plate. This could be within a day or could take many years.

Do plates sell well on Ebay? For reference the registration in question is UIJ 166. I have absolutely no idea as to why it would be valued so high.

If I were you, I would stick it on Regtransfers or where ever at a price that gets you want you want from it and then just leave it on the car.

If it ever sells, result. If there are no calls, fine it doesn't cost to add it to their database.

Presume you didn't pay a premium for the car based on this £1,200 plate?

I'd knock a zero off the end of the valuation amount !
Check out eBay to see what they fetch rather then what dealers value.
It's a NI reg and as such aren't worth anything like as much as GB three letter and three number. Also you would struggle to find someone with initials UIJ
My Range Rover has such a "personalised" plate - NJI 5788 and I value it at £nil. In fact i'll happilly give it away to anyone who pays DVLA fees so I can have the original 1972 L reg reinstated.

This is what I was thinking. No the plate had absolutely no effect on the sale or sale price. I just thought it would be nice to recoupe some money from the plate, if at all possible.

I'd take the £800 if you can get it! Personally, I dont think its worth that. RegTransfers have UIJ718 for £570 which I dare say is negotiable.

Sorry for the bump.

My sisters car is in the process of being written off but according to the mechanic at the garage doing the quote for the work the number plate on the car could be worth a few quid. The plate in question is R2 RMS, any ideas?

I'd tell him to stick with fixing cars. It wont we worth the trouble of retention imho
