So what would be the cheapest daily car to run for a year @ 250 miles/week (no motorway) including purchase, insurance and all running costs?

Ford Ka?

Not sure the KA would fit the bill - fuel economy on ours for a 1.3 engine was atrocious.

1.9 or 1.5 D french box would be cheaper I think.

The only reason I mentioned a Ka was that we used to have one as a second car and it was cheap, fun and reliable.

If there are better options for commuting and shop runs it'd be good to know.

I'd be interested to know how cheap/old you can go without sacrificing reliability.

I gonna go against the small hatch theory...

I went for a Audi A4 1.9Tdi, 1996 plate. Real world 50mpg - even round town, comfy, pretty bullet proof so running costs are low, and costs me £250 fully comp (33y/o, Reading postcode, no points/claims).

I'd much rather be driving that than a little 106/Saxo etc.

Cost me 800 notes just over a year ago.

Yes. Certainly on a 1.5d, they aren't fussy

AFAIK yes, it is all down to the fuel pumps.

iirc the 1.9 will tolerate it, but only on the Bosch pump
