Evening chaps,
Another what car i'm afraid, could do with help from people with a wider car knowledge than myself.
I've got in contact with Footman James and Peter James with regards to a classic car policy at the age of 17, the reply from Peter James is basically that the car must fit the criteria below. Footman James yet to respond.
Criteria is follows
1.3L or smaller
Saloon type
Eligible for a classic car policy (so ~20 years old?)
They suggested Triumph Herald, Ford Anglia and an Austin Mini. I've looked at the Herald and Anglia and both seem out of my price range (~£1.5k) but was wondering what else is out there?
Whilst I'm at it, I though a Mini was a hatchback not a saloon?

Mini is a saloon - boot drops down, not lifts like a hatchback (I know most saloons lift too, before anyone points it out!) and is separated from back seat of car by a solid metal barrier.
Do you want an actual classic, i.e. something with appeal, or just something that fits the category? Vauxhall Nova saloon, astra belmont, Ford orion, sierra if you can find one, VW Polo saloon (Derby, I think it was called?)
Also, have you checked whether you gain no claims bonus with a classic policy? My MR2 one didn't.

1980's Austin Mini (value £1000)
Standard everything
3000 miles a year (this might have been more but I can't remember)
I'm 17 and male, no parents on the quote.
£750 a year, but only third party fire and theft.
£1450 a year fully comp.
Adding parents to quote as named drivers made no difference.

With regards to it being a classic, I am not actually fussed at all with regards to this. If it's a classic that's a bonus but if it just fits the bill then so be it.
I'm just seeing what other cars there are out there, as even though I take an interest in all older cars, my knowledge of them isn't that wide!
1.3 litres used to be the standard size engine in a base model, midsize saloon (whether Escort or Cortina).
If it were 1986 again (25 years old) you could get a Cavalier, a Belmont, a VW Polo or Jetta, a Nova, an Orion, a Rover 213, a Montego, maybe a Renault 9, a Honda Ballade, Toyota Corolla, Nissan Sunny or a Mazda 323, all with a boot and a 1.3 litre engine. I suspect (but don't know) that a hatchback would be okay.
There seem to be loads of Morris Marinas for sale with the 1.3 litre engine too - but probably not all that safe and quite crude compared to early 80s cars.

I think what I'll do is grab a copy of Practical classics and browse Car and classic/PH see what's around and give them a call with a small list (nothing that takes the piss). Although my definiation of what takes the piss and theirs could be different (I believe someone on here got insured on an MGB but not on a E30 316 touring as it was too quick or something).

Doesn't really get me any further, but at least it can confirm that they will insure a 17 year old. I don't want to phone up with a long list of cars and asking whether I can be insured on them or not, wastes their time tbh! Thank you for your enquiry.

The only thing that springs to mind is an Alfa 33. I very nearly bought a 1.3 one around last Christmas but decided against it in the end.
