Afternoon PH, I need a new car, something cheap, newish, nippy and fun.

It must be sort of 2008 onwards, £6k, Group 8 max (needs to be under £1,100 to insure now.

I've been looking at this sort of thing, but the powers that be have told me that the Yaris is too old, the Swift will depreciate too much as Suzuki's always have done (true?) and is verging on too old.

Something around those prices for insurance.
No bigger than Focus/Golf size etc.

Overlord, oddly, despite some of their own criteria has suggested a 2009 Peugeot 207 Verve 1.4...

All newish cars lose money and pretty much ALL hatchbacks will plummet money in a similar fashion.

And I'm sorry, but anyone who thinks a 2008 car is too old, is either mental, insane or needs a reality check!

Classic and kit cars are by far and away the cheapest to insure and in most cases have far stronger residuals too. For an enthusiast they should also appeal far more.

Well, I can't really go for anything 'enthusiast' as the powers that be need to agree with it, really it's got to be a small hatch. Post 2008 for low milage and maybe some warranty left.

How about you buy your own car, then you can choose what you like?

By your own car??

Don't get me wrong, I know how it can be. And if their logic made sense would be one thing, but it doesn't. It's just stupid restrictions for stupid or no real reasons at all. Why not investigate some alternatives and see if you can come up with a more appropriate proposal??

I recall I was once told I couldn't use a classic Triumph as a daily driver - some 60,000 miles later I was still enjoying a classic sports car smile

I have to agree with the buy your own car advice. There are plenty of nice cars around for £2-3k, leaving you a lot left over for insurance, fuel, maintenance etc.

Worrying about a warranty when your £6k supermini is losing £1k or more every year in depreciation is madness.

My advice is to buy your own car. Like a real grown up.

Tom,

the post '08 stipulation is laughable. You would have thought that after owning the Mazda, your parents would know that cars don't automatically implode when the warranty runs out. biggrin I hope you have put this to them! readit

- If you had £6k to spend, and didn't have to comply with their requirements, what would it be?

Its not very often I resort to the use of "[/thread]" in one of my posts, but I'm confident. A truly wondrous little car.

wavey Clive!

I tried persuading them to let me change mine for an immaculate T-reg 65,000mi Audi A4 SE 1.8, thinking that after a succession of good Audi's they'd like the idea, oooohoohh no!

Personally a Suzuki Swift Sport or something.

I'm warming to the idea of a 207 as I rather like them, but whatever...

At the moment, fulfilling the requirements, I'm looking at

Suzuki Swift GLX 1.5
Peugeot 207 Sport/Ceilo/Verve 1.4VTi(95)
Vauxhall Corsa D Design/SXI 1.4
(last gen) Ford Fiesta Zetec/Zetec Climate/Zetec Blue 1.4 or a Zetec-S
Fiat Panda 100HP (though I see me being told explicitly 'NO FIATS!' again

that sort of thing

I would kill for that. The spec is utterly, utterly, UTTERLY perfect!

You're a dealer, what are they like depreciation-wise? I know in 2009 Fiat were struggling to get them out fast enough along with the 500 and pre-reg examples etc were fetching more than new cars, according to the Fiat man in Portsmouth...

Out of those, the Panda and the Swift are the better options. The Ford and Vauxhall are underpowered given their weight (our Corsa C has the 1.4 and it's acceptable when pulling 970KG - with a load of 4 people on board - bringing the car up to approximately the weight of the new model, the engine struggles).

But given your situation, and if you want something a little larger than the Panda / Swift, you know what I bought... wink
