Hi Guys,

I would have preferred a poll, but not sure how to do that.

So in the meantime, a question for you aficianados with the background engines are likely to be fewer cylnders, turbo charged etc.

Of these 4 which one do you reckon is the best ALL things considered - drivability, reliability, economy etc etc.

BMW E92 M3 V8 4.0 litre 420ps
Audi RS4 V8 4.2 litres 420ps
Porsche 911 GT3.2 Boxer 6 3.8 litres 435ps
Mercedes C63 AMG V8 6.3 litres 457ps

A ranking would be useful Thanks smile

Tough, i've driven all but the rs4.

911 by a country mile.
m3 the perfect poor mans GT3 - only let down by it's brakes.
c63
rs4

If anyone ranks them any different i'm not sure what planet they are on.

You may be surprised by the c63 beating the rs4 but i love it so much for it's big capacity v8. I just find the rs4 too reserved hence i've never driven or bought one.

C63.

You dont expect an engine that big with such as glorious noise in a small-ish 4 door saloon.

Prob the worst for econmy tho.

Oh and to the OP, its a 6.2 - not a 6.3 wink

GT3- Good power and torque, driveable and turns feral in the upper rev range.
C63- Anyone who needs this explained shouldnt be on this forum.
M3- Rev hungry but lacking on torque, comparitively small powerband.
RS4- Similiar to above just not quite az zippy as the M3's.

Please dont get me wrong these are all absolutely fantastic engines but youve asked us to tell you the best from the list.

Only with the AMG performance pack. Without it the m3 will almost run circles round it in poise and drive-ability. Once it has a LSD and the upgraded brakes only then is it a worthy contender for the 2nd spot.

It's not all about serious grunt. As an all round package it HAS to have the performance pack.

Only if you are buying brand new

It was an option from about 2008/9. No power upgrade then. It transforms the traction levels and balance but the m3 still felt much more agile.

Which m3?? If e46 then the e46 wins since nobody else seems to have noticed the point "Best engine" rather than best car....

His title says best engine but then in the post he says all things considered.

Agreed slightly crossed over but i stand by the e46 M3 being the best engine out of all of those. The rs4 and amg are merely v8's with nice exhausts fitted. The porker engine is a lovely piece of kit but not up there with the m3's i dont think.

Great Pretender

I'd agree with this.

The RS4 V8 underwhelmed me to some extend, both in terms of its performance and the rather synthetic noise it made. No personal experience of the Merc 63, but I like what I hear. And of course the BMW M3's S65 is a total masterpiece. Impossibly fast and glorious sounding, it's sure to remain as one of M-division's greats. Certainly it's all down hill from now with the introduction of turbos IMO.

As for the Porker, well it pains me to say it, but if ever a better engine is produced, it'll need to run on dilithium. That Mezger GT1 lump is not of this world frankly.
