Car Tax - Quick Question?
Discussion
My tax runs out at the end of this month. Next week I'm trading in my current car for a replacement.
Other than dealing with the V5 side of things, is there any risk that I'll flag up as having no tax or anything?
My car's being traded in at a franchised dealer so will be sold on, it's not being scrapped/SORN'd or anything like that.
Thanks.

The tax will run out when the car isn't in your name. Don't panic. Other than dealing with the V5 side of things, is there any risk that I'll flag up as having no tax or anything?

The dealer will tax it when the have it off you.
If you sell the car, make sure you fill in the part of the V5 telling the DVLA that you've sold it and send it registered post to them (DONT leave this to the dealer). Take a copy of it, that way they cant say you've not informed them. If you dont own the car when its tax expires its not your problem.
There is a yellow section of the V5 (top right) for when you sell your car to the motor trade.
You should send this part to the DVLA, keep a copy of it just in case. You will also have a purchase invoice from the dealer confirming they have bought your car, you can use this should you have any problems.
The dealer will not re tax it. It will only get taxed when the next retail customer buys it.

Cool thanks all - I knew taxing it wouldn't be my problem but wanted to know if there was a way to best avoid any hassle should DVLA's tax arm not speak to the V5 arm.
It will be a problem
The dealer will keep it and DVLA will send you an FPN for not having SORN
Photocopy everything you send to DVLA including the franked envelope, ( or pay for the stamp at the PO and get the receipt)

I was thinking about you earlier (that sounds wrong) when I saw an 11 plate Freelander, wondered when you were getting yours.
Thanks
Back to the V5 stuff, afraid I don't change cars terrible often so, I have the V5 in front of me - so on the day, yellow section, keep it, copy it, send the original and obtain proof of posting - job done?
