A question for the HGV drivers on here please
Discussion
On the back of some HGVs, there is a sticker which says that this vehicle is limited to 40mph on single carriageways (or something like that). How does that work then? Are these lorries fitted with a tracker which limits it when it recognises the type of road it's on?
Thank you in advance!
Thank you in advance!

It's actually illegal for goods vehicles to travel faster than 40 on a single carriageway road. I assume that it's an anachronism from years ago when lorries couldn't do much more than that, and the brakes weren't up to much either! It should have been repealed years ago in my opinion, but perhaps the drivers will have a different opinion.
It's stupid really. All it does is cause dangerous traffic jams and queues where people take risks to pass.
And then buses/coaches. Despite carrying passengers and of similar weight, they seem to be allowed to do whatever speed they like.
And a small van like a Caddy that falls over the 2000kg GVW law....is only allowed to do 50mph on a single carriageway, yet a 2.7 ton unladen range rover can drive flat out.
Motoring laws are a complete mess.

My company has just been hit with this so the law must be coming down hard. 3.5 tonne land rover cherry picker and wood chipper limited to 50mph. It will either be the law or company policy. I do 24,000 miles a year now at 50mph now. Bored!
That must be pure mogadon; how do you stay awake? These laws are asinine beyond belief, and as noted cause enormous frustration. It would be far better to have more trafpol enforcing the previous perfectly fine laws rather than this unworkable mess of speed limiters and vehicles limited to different speeds on single carriageway roads(what mouthbreather thought that up? That really does wonders for safety).I am a class 1 driver, If I know a certain road well enough then I will go along at 50. But some roads are very twisty and I wouldn't want to do 40! depends If A= wot load I am carrying B= conditions of the road and c= the volume of traffic. Of course their are other factors to deal with.

Exactly. I'm Class C and C+E qualified ( though I don't drive professionally ) and everything comes down to sensibility. hidetheelephants said:

Yep! it's a bloody mess! Amazingly, lower speeds will inevitably cause as much damage as higher ones! Overtaking due to frustration, brain switching off = no attention, etc.... The only way I get through it is - audio books, coffee and fags. Then I've got 8 hours of tree cutting to do. Return journey is always the worst. Tired and low concentration. 50mph makes it worse. I've spoken to work mates about it. let the law enforce it on the fly. At the end of the day it's our licences. I can understand that maybe lower speeds mean less accidents but in practice mr. M5 won't see it that way as he hoons round a blind bend past a slow moving vehicle...

Pretty much everything thats already been said other than;
Artics and everything over 7.5 Tons is limited to 56 mph (80km/h), despite the fact that the limit for HGVs on motorways is 60mph. Single carriageways is 40mph.
Its only because of our European masters that we obey 56mph!

My motor has been screwed right down to 52mph. The bosses, (who are mostly university graduates and who haven't sat in a truck let alone driven one), think that turning the limiter down will save fuel. Wrong! Show my motor the slightest incline and the autobox changes down. The autobox goes up and down, up and down, up and down all bloody day long, which actually uses more fuel. If the limiter was at 56mph, I'd have the momentum to tackle hills and keep the needle in the green band.
Bosses?? Idiots the lot o' them.

As you have said, They haven't been in the truck and done the job themselves!! My motor has been screwed right down to 52mph. I am also a C+E Licence holder, when i was driving for a living i used common sense on Single carriageway A roads, often sitting at 50mph as i found that doing 40mph was far more dangerous in some situations, with suicidal car/van drivers often pulling crazy overtaking manouvres just to get past. Doing 50mph decreased this greatly
Im not condoning my reasoning for speeding but in the right situations the 40mph limit is plain silly
