306 GTi-6 Questions
Discussion
Good morning,
I currently have a 306 Dturbo as my daily runabout and have become quite fond of it. I'm thinking of ditching my MX5 later this year and switching to a single car but don't think the Dturbo will cut it as my only car - great handling and very frugal, but noisy and a bit slow. However, I've been immensely impressed with the 306 so much so that I'm looking carefully at the 306 GTi-6.
I've searched, looked at reviews, and done a bit of homework. However, a few questions remain:
MPG. Lots of reference made to very poor MPG but no figures suggested. Parkers/Autotrader suggest an average of about 32-35mpg, is this way out? Sounds about right for a 2.0 16v smallish car. I get 43-46mpg from my 1.9 non HDI Dturbo.
Phase 1 or Phase 2? I actually prefer the looks of the Phase 1 and I've seen a few examples for ~£1200-£1500. Seems a bargain for what they are. Any major differences aside from looks between the two?
I'm quite aware of the 306 foibles, but anything particular to the GTi-6 I need to be conscious of when looking? I'd ideally be looking for <100k with a comprehensive service history and recent cambelt change.

i had 3 of them, i'd always go phase 1 but thats personal preference. it looks harder imo but in the majority does lack air con if thats a consideration. cambelts are the main point to check mate, make sure its been done. Also check teh clutch. the cable runs round the back of the exhaust manifold so dries out and can make the clutch operation very heavy.
I think they are great cars. My phase 1 went off the clocks in 5th gear with 6th to go.

Thanks for the quick response!
Clutch issue is the same with my Dturbo, quite snatchy at the biting point but doesn't bother me a great deal, you learn to live with it.
Not in the least bit bothered about A/C. Seems to be one of the 306 weak points anyway so even those with A/C probably wouldn't work!
Any heads up on the MPG? Due to my low mileage I'm not overly bothered but would be nice to know given current fuel prices. I've seen anything from 25 to 35mpg average quoted on the web.

I had a phase two, can't remember figures but it was fairly good on fuel, 6th gear helps on motorway. Great cars, as stated already make sure its had the cambelt, water pump etc done or do it as soon as you get it!
If a/c doesn't bother you how about the rallye version, same as a gti6 but lightweight?
I miss my gti-6 and seriously considering another one, they seem to be a bit of a bargain at the moment!

I'll be keeping tabs on this thread, as i'll be after one if a few years.
Always wanted one.
The rallye will be a whole bunch more, 4k as opposed to like 1.5k!
They only made 500!(200 red, 200white 100 black) Very rare.
I heard the 6 speed 'box has essentially two '3rd gears' aswell. Little bit of a marketing ploy, but it doesnt bother me
Good luck with the search, keep us posetd!

I bought a black Rallye as a daily about a year ago and I love it. Fuel consumption around town is fairly woeful but the ride and steering are fantastic. They've got bags of space, sound good and generally seem pretty reliable. I'm sure a 205 would be more raw, but the 306 just seems to make sense and they're still quick, even by today's standards. Highly recommended.
The only real thing to look out for is the Cambelt make sure It's been done. Listen to the engine amd if it taps walk away. Means its had a belt go and the valves are bent.
Apart from that it's the usual door wiring that fails on all 306s, gear linkages wear, aux belt tensioners wear and whine and are about £50 each.
Great cars and always hanker after another.
