Alright lads, I recently got a new car and insured it with a new insurer. I have posted my insurance certificate off to my old insurer as they requested to perform the cancellation, and I'm awaiting my proof of no claims discount letter from them.

My new insurer sent me an email on Friday saying if they did not get a proof of NCD letter within a week they would begin proceedings to cancel my insurance. If my proof of NCD does not arrive tomorrow I'm going to be cutting it really fine! I have emailed them (their phone line is £1/min and probably not open on weekends) asking if I can send a photocopy of my old renewal letter from my previous insurer, which details my NCD. What I want to know is, is this kosher? If I send them this, is it likely to placate them?

I have already emailed them stating that I'm still waiting for my NCD letter, but I think perhaps I should just send the renewal letter photocopy on anyway and hope that puts them off from wanting to cancel my insurance! I really don't appreciate getting fked around by my old insurer, I just want the letter!

Do you have your last renewal offer from the old insurer, that should state no claims or has in the past?

Why don't your new insurer call the old ones for verbal proof of NCB?.

Why is it that we are always told insurers cross reference details to avoid fraud, yet you have to provide proof of NCD?

This same thing happened to me. It's a very short period in which you have to give them your proof of NCB.
It cost me quite a lot in cancellation fees and then the company had to requote me.
needless to say I was extremely pissed off.
I meant to complain to the ombudsman but never got round to it.

I think this is extremely sharp practice. With today's technology it must be easy to check.

Last few times I have emailed a scanned in copy of the renewal, or in the case of Flux a copy of the pdf for the renewal, as proof of NCD.

Thats what i thought. My renewal quote always includes a letter headed 'proof of no claims'. If you cancelled your old policy then you won't get that years NCB anyway.

Disparate companies with disparate policies that don't appear communicate effectively with customers, the rest of the industry or government.

For a start, advanced drivers who are statistically less likely to be at fault in a crash are paid no attention.

Just give them a bell. Rest assured they probably don't want to cancel the policy, so a few extra days if required shouldn't be a problem.

Usually if you can give them details of your previous insurer, and the policy number, they will check for themselves, so if you've sent the renewal letter via e-mail you should be fine. If you haven't got the proof of ncb in time, and you haven't heard back from your new insurers, call them. As mentioned by a previous poster, the last thing they really want to do is to cancel your policy.

A renewal letter is acceptable proof of no-claims.

And are those the same statistics that insurers use to calculate their premiums?.

Because they cross reference details in an attempt to find a reason to charge you more, and you have to provide proof of NCD because there is no gain to them going it.
