Hi guys,
I've often read these threads about abandoned cars, and how people want to claim them as their own via getting hold of the V5, and if no one disputes it, its theirs..
Then typically the band wagon come along and state the facts about the V5 may be in your name, but it doesn't mean your the legal owner, fair enough...
But, what the hell does prove your the owner then? I own a car, I have a V5, I have insurance, I have an MOT, but I don't re-call ever filling out an ownership document? (Unless this is within the V5, but surely you can change that too if you can get the 'keeper' in your name)
I'm probably being stupid and missing something obvious?

Sadly I don't think you are.
New V5's now have "This document is not proof of ownership" written across the front. It seems only a receipt is proof of ownership but that doesn't seem to be enough from some of the horror stories here and elsewhere.
You'd think there'd be some laws and maybe even a government depratment to make all this simple for everyone...
p.s. I know I made a spelling mistake, it wasn't deliberate and I was going to correct it but somehow it just seemed, well, serendipitous. So I left it.

I was thinking about this the other day on another post about buying a car as a gift, so filling out the other persons name on the xfer docs. If u wanted to b naughty, what's to stop u buying a banger for £200 private sale, fill out some random guys name and address and take the car cash. Dvla take up to 6 weeks to send the 'new owner' their v5 by which time u have run up some nice speeding tickets n gotten rid if the banger u no longer need. As long as u don't get pulled u wud b totally anonymous yet managed to do all that?!
