Advice needed RE retention on an untaxed car I have bought

Hey, Im new, and in search of some information....

I have purchased a car from a person I know, the car has not been taxed Since June 2010. I had some mechanical problems, that were put right and due to some bad financial circumstances he couldnt afford to tax it, insure it etc and basically hasnt been using it.

ANyway, it has a private reg on, he wants that on retention. He has no V5, so I have had him fill out a form for the retention a form for a new V5.

When I go to the DVLA office tomorrow to get it all sorted out. As it hasnt been taxed will that hold up the retention and the V5 being returned to me? and me being able to have the new plates made up?

Or if they have any issues with the non taxing of the car will they just bill the previous owner?

I actually took it off his hands as a bit of a favour to help him out financially and im actually selling it on in part ex as i dont want to run a 4x4. So need all this sorting out ASAP.

A car needs to be taxed and have a valid mot to remove a private plate - you can swop of the plate and change to a new keeper at the same time.

I recently sold my car and filled in the form (number escapes me) and sent this off with the new owner details on the v5. new keeper got the logbook with old plate and I got my plate on retention.

So will I have to tax it at the office tomorrow? Or pay the gap in the tax, June until now? or both?

im sure that if the donnor car has not been taxed for more than six months, it CANT be done

i know they are more intrested in the tax side rather than the m.o.t.

So what will the estimated cost be for me tomorrow? A years tax+the retention fee+the replacment v5 document?

please check this out for your self, but if it hasn't been taxed in the last six months, then they will want you to tax it, which means you will need to have an m.o.t. and waite for it insurance.(just to get the tax)

its been some time since ive messed about doing this, so i could be wrong. but i know i got very very close to the six month cut off period once
