Air Compressor
Discussion
Want a small compressor for my garage to use for pumping up car / bike tyres, a few air tools and some small scale spraying.
Am quite happy with secondhand but do not know what is good. Does not need to be oil less I don't think.
Cheaper the better as it will only be used for occasionally.

get yourself to Aldi and buy the lot that is on offer from today.

I went and bought a 2.5hp 24l tank unit for £80(cheapest similar spec machine was over £110).
Then I bought the auto retract extension hose and reel, nut driver, impact wrench, cut off tool, regulator and lube kit!

For amateur stuff that I get up to it will be fine, I'm sure. And if it fails, there is a 3 year warranty! Also looks VERY similar to kit being sold by toolstation...
Mangetout.
Bonjour.

Unless you are deaf a belt driven twin cylinder model is the one to go for.
Unless you are using it every week, one of those is too expensive.A point to consider is that a compressor with a tank is bloody dangerous. If buying second hand you need to 100% that the tank is in tip top condition. Not so much on the outside, but very much on the inside. It needs to either have been drained after use and kept dry, or with bigger static units an air dryer pre-drying the air to be compressed, so that there is no moisture eating away at the walls of the tank.
Although they seem a bargain, unless you know what you are doing, they might not be all that much.

Go for the biggest compressor you can afford, you might not require a large output when you start using it but through time you will want more and more air.
This is my Hydrovane which puts out 23cfm and runs any number of tools at the one time. It doesn't have a tank so the air is instant

How much was that?

I bought the Hydrovane second hand from someone I had bought another smaller compressor from (hence the reason I say buy as big as you can afford). The beauty of this machine is that it was purchased new by the previous owner as a back-up compressor and never used, and with 950 hours on it (they can easily go to 75,000 hours) I couldn't say no. It's a heavy piece of kit and requires 3 phase to run but is almost as quiet as my old Ingersoll Rand compressor which I keep as a back-up now and can be seen hereBB

OK, so let us assume that the transformer required to run your Hydrovane costs more than the cost whole set up from Aldi.
Not really what the OP was after was it?
BB
I never said the OP should buy a 3 phase compressor, merely pointing out the fact that he should buy as big as he can now as he will want more air in the future
