I too would spend my money elsewhere, but compared to what new cars seem to cost these days it doesn't look so bad. My father spends £18k + on (what I would call) fairly average new cars every couple of years, wouldn't do it myself, but to some it's the way they do it.

The prices go so high for these sort of cars because people worship the altar of new, and are willing to part with cash for them.

For that money you could have my car E39 M5 with 400 bhp!, A damn site better drive, and with the change out of £13K left over you could run it fuel free for a year or so.

Not just a VW thing.Sister has just ordered a brand new Audi A1, a car based on a car which is already ridiculously expensive for what it is (Polo, also Ibiza and Fabia), and she's managed to spend nearly £20k on it.
I honestly couldn't believe how much she said it was. So I'm taking every opportunity to remind her she's paying £20k for a Skoda Fabia.

You're right of course and I also worship at your church. However, to most (let's use my dad again) he wants diesel economy, space for stuff (estate) the ability to tow a caravan, climate control etc and the peace of mind a manufacturer warranty gives.
The M5 wouldn't be in contention. It might be if he could afford two cars, but as his only car? No chance.

That won't work. A Louis Vuitton handbag is still a Louis Vuitton handbag - it does not matter if its made from hand-polished unobtainium by catalogue models on the moon or by illegal child labour in a grotty Chinese sweatshop. I suspect that your dad is in the majority in this country, and I suspect the manfuacturers warranty is the ACTUAL thing that most people hold dear in a car. The manufacturers warranty or the perception of peace of mind.

I like the Twist a lot, and for under £13k they make the rest of the Golf range look very overpriced. You would actually pay about the same money for a Polo 1.4 SE with the same options that come standard with the Golf Twist.
i know thats what seems odd about the whole range, if you could get a slightly more powerful version for a little bit more cash i think it would do well, alas you cant and your looking at ££££££££ for a bit more power.
