On a vehicle of that age, I wouldn't be to concerned about how many owners.

What *would* concern me though, is how many times it's changed hands over the past say.. 5 years.

Exactly. It's funny how many people who own 7 year old+ M3s suddenly start a business/have a baby 2 months after buying...

My first MR2 had 11 owners in 20 years. It wasn't very nice.

In fact, it's one of my core requirements now when looking for a car, rightly or wrongly. HIstory, condition and "care" is just so much easier to assess when there's 2 or 3 owners.

That said, some cars just do change hands. Things like Evo's, GT-R's seem to be getting sold on after a year or so of people having their fill. I just wonder if every owner scrimps on the big bills if they intend to punt the car on, so you end up with a car that's had the big services, suspension refreshes, etc skipped...

On the other hand, if it's an 'enthusiasts' car, then each time it's changed hands, it's more likely that said 'enthusiast' has had things done etc that otherwise might have been left...

Just another school of thought.

Also, my old man was the second owner of a car but by the time he sold it, it had 5 previous owners (personal to company and back again + 1 screwed up change of address!).

I had a F-reg VW Mk2 GTI 16v with 13 owners. Could not give a st about the number of owners...

Had 145k on the clock, 12mths MOT, 6mths tax, full service history from VW and specialist, new engine from VW at 100k and no rust .

Bought on eBay for £350, upgraded to modest track specs - suspension, seats/harnesses and brake pads/hoses, 120 laps of the Ring in year one, 50 laps in year two, sold on Pistonheads for £1250 at the end...

2 years ago i saw a 'cheap' 2002 BMW 330Ci M-Sport and contacted the buyer to arrange a viewing. I got the reg number prior to going and hpi'd it to reveal it had 10 previous owners and was CAT-C! Needless to say i gave it a wide berth...that was a 7 year old car with 10 previous owners!

I dont see what difference it makes on older cars (?).
As in the description, that RR is 40 years old.

Over 18 owners, it averages out that each owner has kept it more than 2 years - thats not bad is it?

Dont forget that in deceased sales etc, the family may think it necessary to re-register it to themselves effectively adding another keeper.

Cars have to be judged purely on their condition after a certain age.

Number of owners might put people off newer cars -I dont know if it would put me off, if the car condition is what I am after and the price is right.

Certain types of cars have LOADS of owners as people want to have said "yeah, I've owned one of them"....or they realise the horrific running costs! Ferrari's are often like this - poeple keep them for 6 months or a year. Other cars, like M3's etc, are also like this in my experience.

in 2002 I bought a 1 owner 1989 205 gti 1.6 and it needed so much work even though it was still used everyday. the owner was just bored and let things slip. if it had maybe 3-4 owners more the car would have been in better nick.

I agree, E36 M3's are a prime example, they are cheap now and lots of people just want to try one, and so lots of them now have had many owners. Lower owner examples may in some (but not all) cases justify a premium, it probably goes without saying but I would still rather own a car which has had 7 enthusiast owners than 2 careless ones.
