new car leon vs civic

Hey guys
wanted peoples opinion. my dad is looking at a new car sa he is retiring soon, he currently has an 8 year old 1.7 ctdi civic. he has narrowed it down to 3 cars
SEAT LEON 2.0 16V TDI Stylance
HONDA CIVIC 2.2 I-CTDi SE
Vauxhall Astra 2.0CDTi 16V
my preference is the leon mainly because i have driven hundreds of them and had no problems with them.
all of the cars he has looked at have been around a 58 plate too,
what do you guys think?

With such dull cars I suspect it would be a challenge to ID which is which.
If they are retiring shouldn't they be looking at a TVR or a used Jag of some kind?
Only driven the first two, but I'd say Civic - engine is very good for a diesel and its a solid car.
Edit - just check he's OK with that spoiler on the rear! I'm used to cars with not brilliant rear visibility, but the Civic spoiler did annoy!

My dad had a Leon as a company car for a while, seemed quite sprightly, he liked it enough. They're all much of a muchness really 
The Astra is the newest design though, so maybe dynamically its the best? Saying that, the Leon is based on the much loved Golf platform, and IMO, is the best looking of the bunch too.

I just got back from a 500 mile round trip in the company pool car - a 2009 Civic 2.2 diesel. I was really, really surprised how much fun I had driving it - it feels very torquey but the power band isn't 3mm wide like so many TDs, there was not much throttle or turbo lag, it was very chuckable and actually pretty brisk. Economy wasn't amazing, but I think if you drove sensibly 50mpg would be possible on a run. Felt very well built too, and this one has been thrashed hard.
Engine was a bit gruff, but much better than most other 4 port diesels I've experienced. I'd happily have one as a daily driver, and certainly in preference to an Astra or Seat.

OP, I have no experience of the Vauxhall, but been in the Civic of a friend, and initially didn't even realise it was a diesel, really impressive engine... Rear visibility is a bit pants though.
Whats his budget?

But seriously though. Why a diesel if it's just running about? Petrol will be better overall in terms of cost of ownership.
And retiring is no excuse to waste money on a boring car. You could have a nice comfy Jag X Type diesel for that money, even a S Type D I should think.
As for reliable. Don't be daft. All moderish cars for the best part of the past 20-30 years are reliable. Doesn't matter on make or model. You can get good and bad of anything.
Take a look at the reliability surveys. You'll notice that last place is usually pretty close to first place in true terms, as in the scores actually aren't that different, but being forced into a numerical order means there has to be a first and a last place.
How about looking at some Alfa's, Mercs, BMW's, Subaru's for starters. There are plenty if cars that could fill the brief yet also be nicer, more fun and/or more comfy and likely a better or no worse total cost of ownership.

that wont be a problem, he has been a body builder for years and would give most 20 year olds a run for there money.
A friend has a Leon, the FR whatever (170hp PD 2.0TDI). It's a moneypit. Particulate filter issues every few months (and she does mostly motorway miles), needed injectors at 4 years old, several wiring issues leaving it randomly unlocking itself, braking issues. Wouldn't touch one with yours.

these are the 3 he is looking at, he has this issue with skoda because of there name. tried to talk him round it but he wont have it. hes never liked ford so wont go to them, mazda 3 maybe! i'll pitch it to him. he doesnt like the look of a golf.SEATs ride too hard
