trailers & parking - stupid idea?

Chaps, I have a problem. I only have covered space for one car, being in London. Now I have looked at buying/renting a garage, but costs are a bit silly.

Would it be stupid/illegal to simply park a covered trailer out on the road and use it as a sort of makeshift garage? And if such a thing were possible, how would I rig it so that some punter couldn't just tow it away?

I'm still in the office, I'm tired, and I want a Caterham Superlight after having a go in one last weekend at Donington - advantage of trailer is of course that I wouldn'thave to drive the damned thing to trackdays. So please advise!

I was thinking of making it immovable, somehow, unless I fixed it. Locks on wheels etc.

See the kind of nonsense we city dwellers are forced to consider, to keep our P&J's safe? Honestly - makes me want to move to the country. Oh for a double garage!

Take the wheels off and put in on blocks and take the tow-hitch yoke off.

You might find the council still lift it and take it to the pound though if you require resident parking permits etc...............

Last time I rented a garage in London it cost me about £10 per week which I thought was OK. If garages local to you are too pricey then try looking out of your immediate locality and you'll probably find something cheaper.

Trailer with nice car inside sounds like an invitation for someone to remove it!

Abut £5k buys me a covered one that will fit the Caterham - and frankly, that's about 1 year's rental on a garage where I live. Hence it being an appealing option, let alone then being able to tow to track days...

IIRC a trailer is not permitted to be left on a roadway without being hooked to a vehicle.

This ^^^ I'm afraid.

If you have a trailer parked, you need to have it permanently hooked up to a road legal towing vehicle too.

BUT, assuming you did this, you could easily fit a GPS / GSM tracker and arm the geo-fence as soon as it was parked. If anybody moved it, you would be notified immediately, and could track it yourself (or let the rozzers do it).

I had a boat parked outside my workshop for many, many moons, eventually council chappy said they'd had 'complaints' (they hadn't, nobody else could park there or they'd be blocking my fire doors) and threatened to take it away. I went round and hooked the van up, and left it there for another six months. Job done!

Trailer will get stolen by pickeys within 3 weeks.

Police will not be interested.

It's impossible to block a trailer in on a public space.

And caterhams are a waste of time they keep getting in my way at track days, like flies on your visor! Buy a proper car.
