Anyone had this? start up and it over revs to about 2000rpm, come up to a junction and knock it out of gear and the revs rise but dab the brake and it stops.....this is for a colleague by the way so details are sketchy

No mention as to whether it's a petrol or diesel, what model Focus it is, etc etc, but certain models of Focus can have idle valve problems, although it usually manifests itself as a fluctuating or uneven idle rather than a screamer.

I suppose if it's exactly as described then there could be leak in the vacuum line to the brake booster which is causing unmetered air to find its way into the engine

My mk1 focus would do this all the time. Sometimes it would sit at junctions idling at 4k. It was the ICV (Idle control valve). I replaced it one winter and it was doing the same in 1 month. I think part of the problem is icing as it was mainly in winter it did it. Anything under ambient 5 deg C and it would happen atleast once a trip. In the summer it would be fine. I did find stripping it off and soaking it in carb cleaner stopped occurance or severity for a bit but if you wanted it perfect it would be a once a fortnight job.

This might be a really stupid suggestion, but he's not resting his foot on the throttle pedal is he? That would explain why it stops when he touches the brakes. hehe

Carpet getting stuck under the throttle pedal? That's what caused my Focus's throttle to 'jam'.

I think the early mk2 petrols with the variable valve timing did have a tendency to do something similar naturally though.

Is the car warmed up? My Civic would idle at 2k when cold then drop to below 1k once full warmed up. Toyota MR2 Mk3 also idles at 1.5k when cold.

I could quite easily be mistaken, but I always thought the IACV issue was exclusive to the Sigma engine (1.25, 1.4 and 1.6), whereas depending on whether it's a Mk1 or Mk2 a 1.8 would be either a Zetec or Duratec

Although I do agree, it does sound like an idle valve issue if you ignore the brake pedal bit

The intake manifold runs between engine and bulkhead. The ICV is stratigically placed in an annoying position between the manifold and block so you have to remove it blind. You may want to remove the elbow to the intake for ease of access. Follow the wire to the engine side of the throttle and you should find it.

The seal is a pair of 0 shaped rubber seals joined together so technically they need replacing each time. Your call on that. It's two bolts top and bottom of the valve. You'll be best off feeling for them.

When it is off I just filled it full of carb cleaner. Left it 30 mins. Refitted. Gave it some revs and took it for a drive to knock any rubbish off.

Wookie- mine was the 2.0 zetec and it did it. I don't know if it is a problem on any specific engines or not. It's just a general Focus issue I have heard about.

Fair enough thumbup

I know my 1.6 occasionally used to hunt and remember reading it was a common thing for the Sigma, obviously I missed the fact it happens on other models!

The 1.8 still uses a throttle cable, make sure it's not sticking. smile

Hello there
I have a ford focus mk1 1.8 16v zetec
Can anybody help me please?
At lights & changing gear the car over revs,
Work done do fare.....
The TPS has been changed 3 times,
Idle air valve an throttle body cleaned,
new negative battery terminal,
power steering pressure switch
and wire to loom checked
Battery negative taken off for 20 min
Ticked over for 10 min then driven.
Still the over revving is still there, it's driving me mad.
Today noticed a leak in the power steering pressure hose
Can this cause the revving problem???
Any help is greatful, I'm at a lose

Mods, perhaps this should be moved to the "Pet Per Query" forum...

OP,if its a mk2 it will almost certainly be the crank breather S hose behind the inlet manifold, you cant really see it until you remove the manifold,it will be perished.
