Need some advise please.

So my gearbox died on me last month and I had to get it rebuilt by this company who specialise in VAG gearboxes, Long story short, the person who rebuilt the gearbox suggested I go for a bigger final gear ratio to help with Fuel economy, I did ask at the time if this would effect how the car drives and he said it would be almost the same but slightly lower RPM in final Fifth Gear. But it turned out the final gear ratio put into the Gearbox is just plain bloody dangerous.

When the car is in the Fifth Gear there is just no power in the engine to play with because the gearing is to big, my girlfriend who sometime drives the car said she nearly had an accident because she went to overtake on the motorway and put her foot down and there was just no power from the car in Fifth Gear doing 80-Mph, and this is with a car that has 220-Bhp, not the most powerful car in the world, but the car still had good pull in the final gear before the gearbox got rebuilt.

So what are my option here, can I go back to the Gear Box company and ask them to put in the correct final gear ratio, or do I not have a lot to go on because I agreed to the gear ratio change.

This I'm afraid.

But remember that was on the advised of the Mechanic who fixed the gearbox, and I did not ask for the final gear to be put in place, I was also told by the mechanic there would be minimal performance difference with the car.

How much longer is 5th gear now? I'm guessing this is a diesel and it now revs so low that the turbo isn't spinning fast enough even at 80mph?

Can you just change gear if you want to overtake?

Are you getting more fuel economy?

And what was she overtaking that she needed to accelerate from 80mph!

The car is a Petrol 1.8T. Put it this way, I was doing 110-Mph on the German Autobahns last month in Forth Gear, put it into Fifth Gear and there was just no pull from the engine.

What revs is the engine doing at, say, 70mph in top gear?

That is it, there is not that mush difference in RPM, but there is a big difference in the car when in Fifth gear and how it accelerates, or should I say, lack of it.

So what did it used to be and what is it now?

I suppose about 3100-Rpm at 70-mph before the gearbox was repaired, and now about 2700-Rpm with the new gearbox.

Have you considered a remap to see if they can extract some more low down torque to suit your new gearing?

In all seriousness, how about getting the car chipped? The extra torque will overcome the longer ratios.

Obviously there's an insurance cost to deal with so it might not be cost effective.

edit: ha! beaten to it.

The car has been remap by Revo a couple of years ago, this is why I am complaining about power loss in the final gear.

Hmm, well you could tell them that you aren't happy with the new final drive, maybe they will be kind and not charge much.

Has it resulted in better fuel economy? If not go back to them and ask for it to be returned to the original ratio.

Is it really that bad, or is it just a case of having to change your driving style slightly?

My 240bhp Leon Cupra sat at around 2700rpm in 6th, and I never thought that it was slow. If you need quicker acceleration then just drop a gear or two.

I think if you give yourself time to get used to it, it will be perfectly fine.

To be fair the guy did ask if you wanted it for economy. If you'd told him you'd rather keep the performance than trade it for economy then they would have kept the same final drive.

Where is the speedometer sense point on these gearboxes?

Would this ratio change have also affected the speedometer accuracy?

Or is it all electronic read from the ABS sensor or similar?

Grey area. He told you changing the final drive will only affect 5th. Wrong. Final drive affects ALL gears.

There's some confusion of terminology here.

Has the mechanic fitted a new 5th gear, or a new final drive?

If he's fitted a new final drive, all the gear ratio's relative to each other, will be the same, but overall, all the gears will feel longer.

If he's only fitted a new 5th gear, only 5th gear should be affected.

The way i explained it to my OH is think about it like a mountain bike. Your gears are the set of cogs at the rear wheel. The ratio's between them are always the same. But you can alter the overall ratio of all of them, by changing the cog at the pedals.

If he's changed 5th gear, he's replaced one of the gears at the back wheel, only that gear should feel different.

If he's changed the final drive, it's like he's left all the gears at your back wheel as they were, but changed from a small cog, at your pedals, to a larger one, affecting all the gears.

Which is it?
Sorry, you are right. When I say final gear, I really mean only Fifth Gear was changed, and not final drive.
