OK.. Had my first ever prang today. On the way to my accountants in Gorna, when a momentary lapse of reason meant I turned in to a road a tad early, and ripped a guys bumper off! 
Well, pulled over, and went over to have a look. The bumper was well and truly removed. Nothing else, the clips/screws had just been fecked. It was an early 90's Vento.
Being Bulgaria, the insurance companies are infamous for giving low cash payouts for minor damage, so being a nice chap, I offered him 300 leva on the spot to get it fixed. A new bumper would cost him about 200 leva, and he can pocket the rest to buy beer with. He decided against that, and called the police. Okey dokey.
Police turned up, and I explained that it was entirely my fault, and that I was willing to pay him for a new bumper, plus a small compensation, which the police seemed happy with. They spoke to the chap, and he wanted to do it on the insurance. So, off we went to the police station. Wrote a statement, (well, had a friend write the statement, as I can speak a decent amount of lingo, I'm buggered if I can write it properly! I still have to close one eye and look to the sky to think of the cyllic alphabet!), and as I admitted fault, I had to pay a small fine, (150 leva).
So all things signed, off the chap went, looking rather disgruntled, understandably so. I told him I was sorry, and he begrudgingly shook my hand. It was only after the police chap told me that on the insurance they would give him maybe 125 leva at most. The police told him this, and he was understandably miffed.
Well,I offered him a fair amount, and the coppers agreed. Anyway, on I went. Luckily for me, (I know, the prang was my fault, so i should be grateful), but the Godzuki came off pretty well. A slight mark on a wheel arch which went away with a bit of a wash!
Still, that was my confession... First ever prang in 17 years.

Onwards and upwards chap. I had a similar lapse of judgement on Monday - thought the guy in front had gone, pulled forward and scraped his bumper. First prang in 19 years of driving, at least it was minor. Going the insurance route (as was his prerogative).

Sorry about that... I'll plough into a buss full of school children next. it was weird for me. never had so much as a scrape before. So ripping a guys bumper off was a big deal. Especially as it was stuck in the middle of the road, with a police car blaring, etc. Sorry to disappoint.Godzuki said:

We've all done before, give the man a break letting off some steam! I went into the back of some tit who hesitated at a round about, decided to go for it...I followed suit only for him to drop the anchors. Was some crappy P reg Honda but gave him £150 on the spot and left it at that. Felt like a numptie for days afterwards but its all small in the big scheme of things

I've kept an accident free record since a major prang (wrote off a Honda Civic) at 21, so 18 years now.
I'd be gutted if I had a prang however minor. Fair play for going by local customs and offering a cashie. How does it affect your insurance over there? I often think we get a bit paranoid about NCB over here.

Doesn't affect it at all. Another good thing is that the police deal with the insurance matters for you. So is the fine almost in replacement of an insurance excess? - And all dealt with there and then, or does the claimant have to wait weeks/months of their insurance to pay out still? Interested to know if it works better than the system in the UK.
No, the fine is basically a little 'fee' for the police. I've no idea how long it will take for the claimant to get his cash. So basically it was all dealt with in about 90 minutes. Gassing Station | General Gassing | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
