My sister is looking to buy a new Grand Scenic 1.5 diesel, but has been offered a good deal on a 1.9 diesel. Other than the engine, both cars are identical spec. She can take delivery of the 1.9 at the end of the month or wait until end of May for the 1.5.
What are the advantages/disadvantages of choosing the bigger engined car.
Any advice would be welcome

Definitely wait for the 1.5 dCi... Quieter, smoother, similar power delivery, more economical - Personally I think a much improved engine to the 1.9 dCi.

She currently has a 58 plate 1.6 petrol which for some reason, loves to bits. Not had any major issues with it. Is it the diesel engine that is the problem, or just the fact that its a Scenic

It's the fact that it is a Renault Scenic OP! Hateful, unreliable cars!

Nor they are awful cars to work on i also hate working on them parts for things tend to be quite high for some reason. In the last 3 months we have had around 8 of them for all sorts of faults, clucth lines and slave cylinder on a 55 plate. Electronic dash read out failed £1000 for a new one. Countless other faults i just wouldn't touch them. Although they ride very well and are comfortable i found when driving them.

I have tried in vain to talk her our of buying one but she is adamant that it is the car she wants.
So, apart from them being generally not very good, which would be the better engine option. She has told me that she has ordered the 1.5 but the garage phoned late today offering the 1.9.

Wouldnt know on that i would say the 1.9 but dont drive them often to give a opinion just work on them often too. One thing mind you dont work on them 4 different pieces of trim have to come off to get to the air filter. Replace any front lights are awkward you just end up getting fustrated.

Rubbish, because of the amount of these that have failed Renault dealers are replacing them for £100 or you can get them repaired for the same amount.

This. The rot set in with the Scenic 2. Too much unnecessary technology and the dubious reliability issues that have plaged most Renaults for over a decade now doesn't seem to have been addressed.

Consistently poor JD et al ratings don't lie.

There's probably a difference in tax band between the two and the 1.5 will be more economical. I'd agree with everyone else in saying the Scenic is a rubbish car though, although having said that the new model might be a bit better. Can't be any worse than the last one anyway hehe

Come to think about it, it was on a grand espace instead of a scenic. What we were told is that you can fix it but it is likely to go faulty again and the new one we had was £1000 from renault however i belive they are different to the scenic one.

Grand Espace is another kettle of fish entirely, I wouldn't touch one with a barge pole.

We have had a scenic for the past 3 years and had the same problem with the dash, it happens to them all eventually. Apart from that the only other problems we have has is a suspension strut top bearing failed and cost me £20 and I had to fit a new set of glow plugs.

The smaller engine has lower CO2 emissions and will cost less to tax. The 1.9dCi has an extra 20hp and is probably more suited to the Grand Scenic.

The Scenic 3 is a completely different kettle of fish to Scenic 2 - and has seen the same improvement in reliability as happened with the Megane 3...
