Yes I know they are totally totally different!
I wanted a 2006 plate M5, but with the new M5 coming out later this year prices are going to take a bit of a dive and I don't want to be on the receiving end of that. I'll get one in a year or so.

Having narrowed down the criteria, I want a car that can be used every day, and does 0-60 in less than 5 seconds (or close enough). Has to be reliable and not less than 19/20mpg combined (so that ruled out the Maserati 4200).

The Evo IX (I'd get the FQ-360) is an out and out drivers car, but is the ride too hard to live with? Its a bit daft looking as well with a boxy body and that ma-hooosive spoiler....but it makes up for that in other ways!

The 911 has much more in the way of creature comforts but isn't nearly as mental as the Evo. However its a wee bit bland, styling wise. But maybe the better ride tips the balance...

I cant help thinking that whichever one I get, I'd be wishing I got the other..

I looked at RS4's etc but I can only afford the previous model which looks really dated. Same for M3's, don't like the styling of the previous model and not really fast enough anyway.

Is there anything I've missed?

Those first two will do nowhere near 20 mpg combined.

If it's going to be your main car, as much as it kills me to say it get the 911. Evo's just have a habbit of going completly wrong 5 minuites before your leaving for something major.

But if you really do want the evo, make sure you have a £500 reliable shed for thoose oh fk yet more £££ moments with them.

And you think an m5 will?! The m5 v10 needs to be revved to get it to go, no point in having one if your main worry is fuel consumption. Its a bit ridiculous to say youl have a car that does 20 mpg but not one that does 16-17.

911. The EVO will cause your bones to turn to dust. Also, the MPG will be more progressive with an NA car. You will be amazed at the difference in MPG between on and off boost.

If it was not a daily then the EVO would be the right choice.

This ^^ especially if you get the FQ360. My dad strugles to get that mpg with a 300. Also if you really do decide to go for an evo, why not go back a stage and get an evo 8? The 9's have the MIVEC (variable valve timing system) on them, which ive heard a lot of people say makes the engine a lot less rev happy than previous versions.

My IX-360 (weekend toy) will struggle to get more than 220miles to the tank (driving v.v.sensibly), at worst sub 100. Servicing, tyres and brakes are a regular expense. The ride is fine though if you keep it on the standard 17's. I wouldn't like to run it as a daily driver, though i know a number of people that do/have happily!!

I'm just using the combined MPG published figures as a guide. I KNOW anything when pushed will drink, I just want to know that the times of "normal" driving I wont be stopping every 15 seconds to fill up....
M5 published figures are 19mpg combined btw. Maserati 4200 is 14. I can live with 19 but not 14, so somewhere in the middle..well I'd consider it.

I need back seats too, even if they are little.

was yours that bad?

Only had mine 6 months but its been totally reliable.

In reply to the op, I would go for the evo. Should be cheaper to run, more practical, more fun. With a remap and a couple of mods you can run a safe 400/400 bhp/lbft, makes a quick car in all conditions.

It would have to be the 911 for a daily driver IMHO.

Also, with the Evo would you not be getting her serviced rather regularly if she was a daily driver?!

Yes but then they would be! We drove one at pretty normal speeds for about half an hour, averaged 16.9 IIRC.

Its not mine, my dad's one. It has and it hasnt. It's never failed to start first time either. Even back in febuary where it had been sat outside on axel stands since september.

When he bought it, it was on 29,000 miles, the clutch went about 2 months after he had it. Some of the problems were partly out fault after dropping the engine to change the clutch. Buckled some of the pulleys on one side of the engine. But since the clutch went and we changed it, its just had this rattle above 20mph. It would never do it on axel stands either. Just on the road so pretty hard to work out what it was. If you didnt drive it for a week or so, it would go really quiet and you could drive around without thinking what the hell is that. It doesnt affect the power or anything at all. But once it gets driven more than just once a fortnight it starts coming up again and gets really loud, but its just totally random as to when it does it. But it finally did it on axel stands and is coming from inside the gearbox, so thats coming off for a second time when we have enough time to do it.

But the one time it does work it does become the awsome car it was always supposed to be.

Every 4,500 miles... :O not good. One of the few things the X gets around. But thats still only every 8,000 miles. But then again the X really does not have that much of a connection as to previous Evo's. Another thing that lets it down slightly is the pathetic size of the fuel tank. It really is too small.

Yes and no... I'm abroad a lot so it would only get 7-8 months use per year and I don't have a commute so tend to do less than 10,000 miles per year.

I've been offered an old Bora Tdi as a runabout which might be a good idea...

If you can afford the extra insurance/tax/test/maintanece on the bora, then get the evo (=

If you like the idea of a turbonutter car as a DD then an STi (05) is a better choice and much cheaper to run.

In my 05 STi I can drop a 60 litre tank in 140 miles if I drive like my pants are on fire round the country lanes (a well known route to my nans in Norfolk)... Dont under estimate the fuel costs on a turbo car wink

Its nothing major though, just likes regular oil changes in the engine and AYC.

When the Haynes manual says "and then drop the engine out", it doesn't literally mean drop it out.... getmecoat

996 is a sensible everyday car TBH but they were the first Porsche built by accountants and do have their own foibles - camshat solenoids, IMS and RMS, rust, easily marked trim....I do wonder about the obsession with the 20mpg figure...how about a diesel BMW?
