Right brief car history..
1st car
2003 - Ford fiesta 1.4 (px'd in)
2005 - MX5 1.8 (mk2) - WRITTEN OFF 2008
2008 - VX220 2.2 NA - WRITTEN OFF 2011

Thinking about an 04 RX8 231.. yes of I have company cars and have done for some years.. I will drive the toys pretty hard as results will show.. I'm just not sure if an RX8 is going to thrill me as much as my VX did..
I'm also coming out of company car but I only have an 18 mile round trip to work so the poor economy doesn't worry me..
It's just I am worried it will be a step down and after reading many many posts on RX8s it seems to be hugely down to luck when it comes to picking up a good 2nd hand one that doesnt have engine issues..
Any help or advice much appreciated guys..

low mileage and a great car,
high mileage and you're going to need to remortgage
or how about an s2000?

Really great car - hugely practical, great handling, nimble and quick enough.
Fuel economy was the only bug-bear, budget 18-20 mpg (but thrashing it doesnt make it any worse) and you will be on the money.
As a used proposition a low mileage one, nav, bose etc at 6k is a huge amount of car for the money. If you are risk adverse pay a small premium and get one from a main dealer with warranty.
My younger brother (stay with me, it's relevant honest) had a Ford Mondeo which he wrote off.
He then bought a Celica, which he wrote off.
He now has, funnily enough, an RX8 which HE HASN'T WRITTEN OFF!
According to this oddly coincidental situation the Mazda RX8 is The Safest Car In The World and ideally suited to cack handed, lead footed apeths like my younger brother and, it appears, the OP.
Buy an RX8!
He then bought a Celica, which he wrote off.
He now has, funnily enough, an RX8 which HE HASN'T WRITTEN OFF!

Good cars, but I didn't like the power delivery. And it'll feel like a barge after the VX.

I'm fairly thick skinned though & I should have been a little clearer..
My pride & joy of a VX220 got hit by a slightly larger mitsubishi shogun out of control & on the wrong side of the road during our snowy spell.. unfurtunately doing just over £14,675 worth of damage to her..
So yes back on point though..
