Diesel engine oil in a petrol engine?

I have about four litres of Mobil 1 0W-40 (fully synthetic) remaining, leftover oil from my last car. I now have a Lexus LS400 and was wondering if it is ok to use in a petrol engine? I've tried, unsuccessfully, to find a satisfactory answer elsewhere.

I have no further use for it and I'd rather waste £30 of oil.

Different base number to deal with the sulphor from the fuel and more detergetns to wash away crap

Get in touch with pher Oilman at Opie Oils. He knows lots and lots about oil. I know they actually recommend "diesel" oil for some petrol cars occasionally as the most appropriate choice. You may well be able to use it without issue.

I've seen it asserted that Mobil-1 and Mobil-1 Turbo Diesel are the same oil in different containers. See if you can find the data sheets - they're apparently identical.

What does it say on the containers? MB, for instance, make no special recommendation (unless the car has a DPF) and you'll find both versions of the oil are MB229.5 approved.

Here's the oil's specs:



The manual recommends "API SH, "Energy Conserving II" or SJ "Energy Conserving" multigrade engine oil or ILSAC multigrade engine oil". Recommended viscosities are 5W-30, 10W-30 (for UK climates), 15W-40, 20W-50.

My main concern is that TD oil might contain extra detergents or something that might bugger up a sensor, etc.

Actually I just noticed that the gold bottles (which I have) aren't TD oil. So I guess the question is now moot! Sorry chaps.
