Renault 5 to be re-born

So what does everyone think, I personally love the '5 even in standard trim but I don't think it has a following like the Mini and Fiat 500 so it wouldn't sell on the name alone.

Why not think up a new design instead of keep going back to the old ones? Seems there is no creativity these days!

Just makes the original 5 look even better compared to the huge "small" cars being made today.

Agreed, although to be honest the retro-cars seem to be variations on a theme rather than a design dead-end.

Think about it. If you want a retro small Fiat, you can have a 500. If you want a small Fiat featuring modern design, there's the Panda.

Same goes for the Beetle and the Golf. While it could be argued that the MINI is an annoying, dodgy 'retro' design, there's also a case to make that suggests the range that's built up represents what Austin would be building if they were still around (so long as they make a road-ready version of the Rocketman as a real 'mini' MINI).

So long as they continue to make the Clio, I don't have a problem.

Yes - the thing about the original 5GT Turbo was its ability to take on the likes of the Golf GTI and 205 GTi with just a little 1.3-litre engine. Attached to a massive turbocharger.

The R5 was just a boring supermini, no more interesting then than a Clio is today.
If Renault really want to chase the retro vibe a new Renault 4 would be a better idea.

Wasn't it a 1.4? The 5GTT was a fair bit faster than the Golf GTi IIRC, wasn't it something silly like just over 7secs to 60 - weighed very little.

yes it was 1.4,the uno turbo did a 1.3 then a 1.4.

I thought Renault had played the R4 card when they launched Kangoo. Very much a spiritual successor.
With R5 they are just getting on a retro bandwagon. They don't need to! They kept moving forward with good new ideas (eg Twingo).
Fiat went 500 as their entire range had no characterful cars (except Panda which is a modern successor to the original Panda but not retro)
Retro is retrograde. Look at what it did for Jaguar.....

Does this mean that my 1989 Renault 5 TR 1.2 is suddenly going to be worth lots and lots? The value of old minis and fiat 500's rocketed when the new ones came out.

The depressing part is it'll probably be on a clio chassis (also based on the new Nissan Micra most likely) but will cost a feck load more.
