"A BMW spokesperson has now confirmed to Road & Track that the M3 Pickup spotted in Germany is simply a one-off test mule. "BMW M did indeed create the pickup seen on the 'Ring, but it was just an internal project, not something that is in development," said Dave Buchko, BMW Advanced Powertrain & Heritage Communications Manager. "There are no plans to produce it."

That is what they say but what do you believe. They made it for some reason; maybe there is a use or demand somewhere.

The only such use would be in countries where 'utes' are popular, which would be in AUS where most 'imported' cars are taxed heavily. For example a base 330D is the equivalent of £60,000 and an M3 costs in excess of £100,000..

I cannot see the point in that thing even as a test mule. Surely easier just to use a normal M3 shell? They must have a few knocking about?!

Not if you're doing accelerated body fatigue tests on a prototype convertable, for which the roof mech isn't yet developed / availible.

Or if you are testing experimental drivetrain setups. Whether it be gearbox, hybrid or other ideas - having a flatbed lid to just lift away would massively improve acces to that area of the car, compared to a normal og even Touring shell.
