I fail to see the problem, really. A 33k quote just means "sod off, we don't want to insure you". Insurance companies have used this method for years.
^ This. When I was 18 the insurance company just kept telling me "that'll be 10k" no matter what car I asked them to quote on - I took the hint and went elsewhere....Shaw Tarse said:

Age
Type of car
Address
Isn't this a never-ending story, based on numbers?
How many have an insurance on their parents?
How many of that have accidents?
Lets put this into numbers:
Take 90 are "piggybacking" their insurance.
10 are "for real"
So the insurance company don't have any number on how many are actually driving the cars they insure.
Then 10 get a serious accident (eg totalling the other car, worth about 25-30k), and claim their insurance (only 1 of them was insured on his own account).
Now, according to the numbers, does that mean that 100% of the sub-twenty year olds have a crash?
So, when you ask for a claim, they just say: you're going to crash into a 30k car, so you better pay it up front?
Hence creating a downward spiral?
That said, I think the AA are no good in this article:
“The quote he received is clearly ridiculous and this should not have happened. For that I apologise."
“Historically, we have always asked our insurers to quote as often as possible so that we can, if necessary, offer appropriate terms for our customers."
That's all very nice, but if that claim was ridiculous and shouldn't have happened, what would be your valid claim? I don't see it mentioned in the article...
